Microplastics (MPs) are an emerging environmental issue due to their accumulation in ecosystems and living organisms. Increasing evidence shows that MPs impact vascular function, with recent studies finding atheromas linked cardiovascular events. Since smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) crucial maintaining this study examined how activate VSMCs, leading diseases like atherosclerosis calcification. The used polyethylene (PE) polystyrene (PS), common food packaging, as "virgin" or photo-degraded simulate conditions. VSMC viability, apoptosis, cytotoxicity, inflammation, activation markers were evaluated. PE PS affected induced triggered pathological changes such altered migration proliferation. Key RUNX-2 galectin-3, which regulate pathology, activated, alongside the inflammasome complex. In conclusion, can induce harmful of posing potential health risks through cell damage, phenotypic changes. Understanding these toxic mechanisms may reveal critical pathways for intervention prevention.
