Money Talks: Testing a Series of Financial Literacy Modules to Encourage Financial Conversations in Middle School Families

Abstract
The
financial
conversations
parents/caregivers
have
with
their
children
play
a
pivotal
role
in
development.
Yet,
little
is
known
about
strategies
or
interventions
to
promote
these
conversations.
Focusing
on
of
middle
school
students
Midwestern
state,
this
exploratory
study
investigated
the
experiences
who
engage
schoolers.
We
developed
and
tested
“Money
Talks”
,
an
online
series
literacy
modules
enhance
parent–child
Using
qualitative
interview
data
10
as
well
baseline,
module,
follow-up
survey
up
318
parents/caregivers,
we
examined
predictors
impact
increasing
both
frequency
parents’
confidence
for
engaging
Five
key
conversation
topics
emerged
from
parent/caregiver
interviews
including
spending,
banking,
saving/investing,
credit/debt,
decision-making.
In
surveys,
most
important
predictor
results
point
greater
amount
time
spent
rather
than
more
frequent
demonstrate
that
were
effective
“Starting
conversation”
schooler.
Future
research
should
experiment
different
offline
approaches
promoting
other
socialization
methods
such
modeling
experiential
learning.

Abstract
Introduction
This
mixed‐method
longitudinal
study
examined
American
adolescents'
meaning
making
of
salient
COVID‐19
pandemic
events.
Method
Within
phone
interviews,
adolescents
(
N
=
124,
M
age
15.76
years;
46%
Latine)
narrated
their
most
emotionally
impactful
experience
at
two
time
points
~30
days
apart
between
July
2020
and
March
2021.
Narratives
were
coded
for
(1)
content
(i.e.,
event‐type,
relation
to
the
pandemic,
valence
event
[positive
or
negative]),
(2)
linguistic
markers
subjective
processing
(internal
state
language
such
as
positive
emotion,
negative
cognition
words),
(3)
narrative
meaning‐making,
(4)
outcome
meaning‐making
“meanings
made”).
Results
About
30%
spontaneously
made
experience.
Negative
emotion
words
within
narratives
1
positively
predicted
2.
Meaning
increased
use
themes
included:
recognizing
threat
COVID‐19,
coping
with
a
shifts
in
perspectives.
Discussion
Salient
emotional
experiences
that
occur
during
adolescence

likely
be
remembered

Collaboration between School and Parents for Students’ Better Future by Parenting: An Ethnographic Approach

Parenting
programs
have
been
shown
to
improve
children's
behavior.
Therefore,
the
implementation
of
parenting
in
schools
needs
be
revealed
as
a
reference
for
more
easily
implement
them
school
environment.
This
research
uses
an
ethnographic
approach.
A
sample
one
Bandar
Lampung
City
was
determined
using
purposive
sampling
techniques
with
criteria
that
had
implemented
program.
Research
data
were
collected
interviews,
observation,
and
documentation
techniques.
Data
analysis
is
carried
out
thematic
analysis,
which
includes
seven
phases.
Triangulation
are
used
validity
tests.
The
findings
this
study
show
program
through
seminars,
teacher-parent
collaboration
contact
books,
guest
teachers
by
parents,
sharing
short
videos
social
media,
presence
BK
at
school.
Thus,
it
can
concluded
getting
optimal
realizing
collaborative
activities
between
parents
student
learning
