Deciphering the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on food security across different socioeconomic strata in Chile

Abstract
The
disruptive
impact
of
the
COVID-19
pandemic
on
food
supply
has
underscored
need
for
localized
household
assessments
insecurity,
particularly
in
developing
countries
where
such
data
may
be
limited.
Consequently,
this
study
aims
to
assess
economic
access
Chilean
households
pre-
and
post-pandemic
scenarios.
We
utilized
an
Almost
Ideal
Demand
System,
leveraging
Household
Consumption
Surveys
estimate
cross
own
expenditure
elasticities
among
categories.
And,
gauge
potential
prices
security
quantities
that
acquired
were
nutritionally
scored
by
income
quintile.
Our
findings
revealed
a
prioritization
Meats,
Grains
&
Cereals
Fruit
Vegetables
across
all
households,
irrespective
their
socioeconomic

lower-income

than

Background
In
January
2014,
the
Mexican
federal
government
implemented
a
tax
to
sugar-sweetened
beverages
of
1
peso
per
litre
and
an
8%
non-essential
energy-dense
foods.
Prior
studies
have
evaluated
association
these
taxes
on
household
purchases,
but
none
considered
potential
heterogeneity
purchases
by
type
store.
We
aimed
estimate
impact
food
beverage
in
households
overall
