The globally increasing older population raises concerns about age-related conditions, including cognitive impairment and depressive symptoms. In Latin America, nearly one-third of the is affected by either these conditions. However, data investigating association between symptoms, particularly in Brazil, are limited to small-scale studies that have not carefully examined critical effects variables such as education level socioeconomic status on this relationship. We aimed at exploring a representative population-based cohort. used Brazilian Longitudinal Study Aging (ELSI-BRAZIL) database examine relationship symptoms adults, adjusted for potential confounders. Direct acyclic graphs multivariable linear regression were build our model. Depressive measured using short version Center Epidemiologic Studies Scale (CES D-8), combined memory recall test surrogate impairment. study included 8280 participants. Only was identified confounder loss After adjusting age, sex, level, there strong evidence negative performance. For every 5-unit increase CES D-8 score, reduction capacity, translating approximately one word words (mean − 0.18, 95% CI -0.22; −0.15, P < 0.001). addition, we found an interaction Subjects belonging medium (SES) showed more pronounced decline, when compared those with lower SES 0.28, -0.42 −0.14, adults aged over 50, after educational score associated point test. This seems be confounded significantly modified status.
