Over the last 50 years, use of wood adhesives in manufacturing wood-based panel goods has increased efficiency resources. Wood are becoming more popular as need for panels grows. By 2028, global market is expected to reach 21.8 billion dollars. Even though urea-formaldehyde (UF), phenol-formaldehyde (PF), melamine-formaldehyde (MF), phenol-resorcinol-formaldehyde (PRF), and resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) resins excellent terms bonding performance, workability, quality, economy, they consist harmful or toxic chemical agents derived from fossil resources, which make their application severely limited. This review aims go through most significant 'green' high-performance panels, such lignin, tannin, protein, natural rubber, emulsion polymer isocyanate (EPI), 1C PUR polyurethane (for glue-laminated cross-laminated timber), PMDI particleboards, medium-density low-density fiberboards), carboxylic acid, vegetable oil. The current debate on the sustainability of bio-based products questions environmental benefits replacing fossil- by bio-resources. Here, we analyze trade-offs 98 emerging materials compared to their fossil counterparts, reported in 130 studies. Although greenhouse gas life cycle emissions for are average 45% lower (-52 -37%; 95% confidence interval), found a large variation between individual with none them reaching net-zero emissions. Grouped product categories, reductions ranged from 19% 35%) bioadhesives 73% (-84 -54%) biorefinery products. In terms other impacts, evidence an increase eutrophication (369%; 163 737%), indicating that should not be overlooked. The low comprehensive properties of soy protein-based wood adhesives (SPWAs), such as weak bonding strength, poor water and mildew resistance, etc., are the main issues that severely restrict their wide application in manufacturing industry. In this study, fully biobased SPWAs with excellent flame retardancy were developed via a facile cross-linking reaction between protein isolate (SPI), furfuryl alcohol (FA), phytic acid (PA). Because SPI, FA, PA all derived from green sustainable biomass resources, components kind achieved 100% content. Response surface methodology (RSM) was utilized to optimize preparation SPWAs, predicted values highly consistent experimental results. optimized SPWA pH 4.0 content FA addition 16.7% exhibited high aged wet shear strengths 1.07 1.47 MPa, respectively, which superior those for other reported adhesives. The potential of ammonium lignosulfonate (ALS) as an eco-friendly additive to urea–formaldehyde (UF) resin for manufacturing high-density fiberboard (HDF) panels with acceptable properties and low free formaldehyde emission was investigated in this work. HDF were manufactured the laboratory very UF content (4%) ALS addition levels varying from 4% 8% based on mass dry wood fibers. press factor applied 15 s·mm−1. physical (water absorption thickness swelling), mechanical (bending strength, modulus elasticity, internal bond strength), evaluated accordance European standards. In general, developed exhibited properties, fulfilling standard requirements use load-bearing applications. Markedly, laboratory-produced had ranging 2.0 1.4 mg/100 g, thus E0 super grades confirming positive effect a scavenger. thermal analyses performed, i.e., differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), gravimetric analysis (TGA), derivative thermogravimetry (DTG), also confirmed main findings research. It concluded that bio-based, formaldehyde-free adhesive can be efficiently utilized formulations wood-based under industrial conditions.

The sustainability, performance, and cost of production in the plywood industry depend on wood adhesives hot-pressing process.
