Abstract This study represents an empirical, comprehensive investigation of two different inter‐organisational collaborative approaches, offering a novel perspective on circular business models in the modern economy. In this vein, we explore how open innovation strategies foster implementation economy practices within supply chain and ecosystem. addition, identify characterise stakeholders' roles facilitating translation principles into viable business. An inductive theorising approach was employed, leveraging explorative multiple case methodology. Data were collected from 13 organisations involved networks, designed to establish upcycling recover waste food beverage industry. Purpose Short food supply chains (SFSCs) have been extensively researched for their environmental and economic implications. However, these are now confronted with shortcomings such as chain resilience (SLR) societal livelihood (SL) hindering growth. The purpose of this study is to revisit critically analyze existing SFSC literature, a focus on SLR, SL, sustainability human-centricity elements, propose redesigning attributes SFSCs in the era Industry 5.0.
