Ensuring water quality and safety requires the effective detection of emerging contaminants, which present significant risks to both human health environment. Field deployable low-cost sensors provide solutions detect contaminants at their source enable large-scale monitoring management. Unfortunately, availability utilization such remain limited. This Perspective examines current sensing technologies for detecting analyzes critical barriers, as high costs, lack reliability, difficulties in implementation real-world settings, stakeholder involvement sensor design. These technical nontechnical barriers severely hinder progression from proof-of-concepts negatively impact user experience factors ease-of-use actionability using data, ultimately affecting successful translation widespread adoption these technologies. We examples specific systems explore key strategies address remaining scientific challenges that must be overcome translate into field improving sensitivity, selectivity, robustness, performance environments. Other aspects tailoring research meet end-users' requirements, integrating cost considerations consumer needs early prototype design, establishing standardized evaluation validation protocols, fostering academia-industry collaborations, maximizing data value by sharing initiatives, promoting workforce development are also discussed. The describes a set guidelines development, translation, swiftly accurately detect, analyze, track, manage contamination.
