Microplastics are well known for vector transport of hydrophobic organic contaminants, and there growing concerns regarding their potential adverse effects on ecosystems human health. However, recent studies focussing hydrophilic compounds, such as pharmaceuticals personal care products (PPCPs), have shown that the compounds ability to be adsorbed onto plastic surfaces. The extensive use PPCPs has led ubiquitous presence in environment resulting cooccurrence with microplastics. partitioning between plastics fate through determined by various physicochemical characteristics environmental conditions specific matrices. Although sorption capacities microplastics different PPCP been investigated extensively, these findings not yet synthesized analyzed critically. objectives this review were synthesize critically assess factors affect adsorption microplastic surfaces environment. also focuses pH, salinity, dissolved organics, properties polymers relationships dynamics mechanisms. Furthermore, ecotoxicological PPCP-sorbed biota health discussed.
