The settlement area is expanding at the cost of agricultural land in densely populated regions such as Central Europe. This development also affecting forest. Forest clearances due to, e.g. traffic and energy infrastructure development, require afforestation elsewhere but surfaces providing appropriate soil are increasingly scarce. ABSTRACT Large‐scale reforestation is promoted as an important strategy to mitigate climate change and biodiversity loss. A persistent challenge for efforts restore ecosystems at scale how accelerate ecological processes, particularly natural regeneration. Yet, despite being recognized barrier the recovery of diverse plant communities in tropical agricultural landscapes, impacts dispersal limitation on regeneration secondary forests—and especially this changes these forests grow older—are still poorly studied. In a region where animals have been shown be dominant seed dispersers, we evaluate proximity connected network narrow streamside strips forest (SSF) recruitment 1–40‐year‐old forests. We used 8 years annual census data from 45 sites with paired plots, one directly adjoining SSF other further uphill (henceforth “landscape context”), null model approach test effects SSFs basal area, while accounting variation soil, topography, distance between plots stand structure. general, found that landscape context affects multiple aspects recruitment, including species diversity proportion rarer less‐widely distributed among recruits. Unexpectedly, effect did not weaken over time, fast increase area diversity. This suggests development first decades succession may sufficient attract disperse tree species. Our results provide empirical evidence guide restoration initiatives landscapes regions, principally prioritizing corridor networks along streams, also highlighting knowledge gap about restoring animal dispersers

Abstract Enhancing the connectivity of protected areas is a global consensus for conserving biodiversity. Yet, it unclear whether habitats are sufficiently connected within to efficiently protect wildlife populations long-term survival. Here we show that, in general, China’s national nature reserves can effectively about one-half bird and mammal However, they only 25% birds 13% terrestrial mammals with high motility. Areas low conservation effectiveness highly overlapped small size intensity human activity. Artificial landscapes (arable land built-up land), which account less than 2% area areas, disproportionately cause nearly 40% loss. The results suggest that maintaining levels functional as important or networks. Our findings have implications improving management China beyond.

In the face of global biodiversity decline, ecological restoration measures to actively enhance urban and options for biodiversity-friendly greenspace management are high on agenda many governments city administrations. This review aims summarize advance current knowledge grassland by synthesizing research findings approaches globally. Indeed, we found be generally effective in increasing biodiversity; yet, there were variations outcomes due difference soil disturbance methods, regimes, set species introduced a site, specific local setting. Based reviewed studies, formulated recommendations maximizing success grasslands through: i) creating network heterogeneous greenspaces enhancing connectivity between them; ii) maintaining spontaneous vegetation vacant lots wasteland sites that can provide habitats various invertebrate species; iii) evaluating actual conditions, seed bank, rain before efforts take place since these sources could considerably affect outcomes, iv) preserving nutrient-poor conditions instead introducing nutrient-rich topsoil; v) shifting less intensive, reducing mowing frequency avoiding use chemicals; vi) utilizing native dry climate adaptation without irrigation. We further identified gaps regarding city-scale regional-scale effects restoration, interventions multiple taxa ecosystem services, small versus mega-cities, south. These should addressed future studies making general guidelines broadly applicable.

The widespread decline of biodiversity due to increasing urban development raises the need timely identify areas most relevant conservation native species, particularly within cities where natural are extremely limited. Here, we assess multiple role local geomorphological features in shaping patterns and dynamics plant diversity, with aim identifying values priorities an urbanised area Southern Italy. Based on recent historical lists vascular plants, compared floristic composition different portions by considering species' value, ecological biogeographical traits. We found that landscape remnants, accounting for 5% study area, harbour over 85% whole diversity a considerable set exclusive species. Results Generalised Linear Mixed Models show outstanding remnants native, rare specialised compositional similarities among sampled sites resulting from hierarchical clustering, these linear elements also play key maintaining continuity potential connectivity throughout landscape. By comparing current data early XX century, considered significantly more likely host populations declining underlining their as refugia against past future extinctions. Taken together, our findings represent effective framework tackle challenging nature cities, namely providing valuable approach identification priority anthropogenic landscapes.
