Bacteria of the Thiothrix morphotype, comprising genera Thiothrix, Thiolinea and Thiofilum, are frequently encountered in domestic industrial wastewater treatment systems, but they usually not clearly differentiated due to marked similarity their morphologies. Methods ranging from light microscopy, FISH PCR modern high-throughput sequencing used identify them. The development these bacteria systems has both advantages disadvantages.
