Microplastics in freshwater environments pose a serious threat to living beings. Polyethylene microplastics (PE-MP) are the type most used around world as microbeads personal care products, and they have been found aquatic organisms. The behavior toxicity of fluorescent PE-MP spheres with an average diameter 58.9 μm were studied adult, juvenile embryo zebrafish (Danio rerio). adults for genotoxicity, cytotoxicity, histology biochemical markers. Juveniles underwent follow-up gastrointestinal (GI) tract histologic observations, embryos embryotoxicity FET-test. In adults, micronucleus test comet assays neither genotoxicity after acute exposure 96 h at concentrations 0.0, 12.5, 50 100 mg.L−1, nor cytotoxicity through nuclear abnormalities test. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE), Glutathione-S-Transferase (GST) Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) activities measured exposed h. AChE GST significantly changed, while no changes occurred LDH. conclusion, these did not cause toxic effects because there was internalization. observed may be associated GI microbiological dysbiosis, previously reported. intestine juveniles remained present 12–15 days on post-exposure clearance study, showing slow depuration. histological analysis, internalization microbeads, complete cross chorion barrier, embryotoxic exposures 6.25, 50.0 or 100.0 mg.L−1

The growing use of plastics, including microplastics (MPs), has enhanced their potential release into aquatic environments, where microalgae represent the basis food webs. Average specific growth rate (ASGR, day-1), cellular viability pigment concentration (chlorophyll a, c2 carotenoids) measured at 48 No significant observed pattern after 96-h exposure plain oxidized MPs. However, a increase in cell was detected 48-h A decrease ASGR noticed CPF, CPF/Hg-loaded whereas affected by Hg, alone combination. Chlorophyll significantly decreased when while both pigments increased CPF-loaded Similarly, chlorophyll carotenoids content higher tested concentration.
