Microplastic (MP) contamination has become a pervasive global issue, affecting terrestrial and aquatic environments, its potential health hazards are of widespread concern. This review examined the intricate relationship between animal exposure to MPs their effects, revealing that MP affects broad spectrum species across habitats. Crucially, interspecies differences in ingestion, accumulation, responses emerge as central themes arising from various factors, including feeding behavior, physiology, ecological niches. The implications multifarious; animals may suffer physical harm, endure chemical adsorbed contaminants, provoke inflammatory responses, undergo behavioral modifications. Gulls ingest plastic and other litter while foraging in open landfills, because organic matter is mixed with debris. Therefore, gulls are potential biovectors of pollution into natural habitats, especially when they concentrate wetlands for roosting. We quantified, the first time, flow anthropogenic debris from landfills to a lake via movement gulls. focused on Fuente de Piedra, an inland closed-basin Spain that internationally important biodiversity. In 2022, we sampled gull pellets regurgitated by lesser black-backed Larus fuscus feed as well their faeces, then characterized quantified particles ≥0.5 mm. By combining GPS census data 2010 together quantification based FTIR-ATR analysis, estimated average annual deposition wintering population lake. 86 % contained plastics, 94 such glass textiles. Polyethylene (54 %), polypropylene (11.5 %) polystyrene were main polymers. An mean 400 kg plastics moved Only 1 mass was imported faeces. The potential of using organisms as bioindicators marine litter has been an area general interest in multiple scientific and monitoring programs across the globe. Procellariiformes seabirds are particularly vulnerable to plastic contamination, which makes them a research focus group. This study investigated ingestion deceased fledglings adults Cory's shearwaters (Calonectris borealis) collected over eight years (2015 2022) at two Atlantic archipelagos: Azores Canaries. Necropsies were carried out total 1,238 individuals showing high prevalence (90%), with approximately 80% items recovered from gizzard. Fledglings greater loads compared adults, yet morphologies similar between both age classes. temporal analyses conducted generalised additive mixed-effect models revealed distinct trend numbers, but not terms mass. In addition, spatial showed that Canary Islands ingest higher quantity proportion threadlike than Azorean animals. These results suggest contamination NW Africa foraging grounds next Canaries highlight fisheries source region. On other hand, information gathered birds suggests they would be able monitor changes composition floating North Subtropical Gyre. Overall, our outcomes support use shearwater victims light pollution key bioindicator contamination. Plastic ingestion presents many potential avenues of risk for wildlife. Understanding which species and environments are most exposed to plastic pollution is a critical first step in investigating the One Health implications exposure. The objectives this study were following: 1) Utilize necropsy as part ongoing passive disease surveillance investigate ingested mesoplastics birds collected Ontario Nunavut, examine relationships between bird-level factors debris; 2) evaluate microplastic compared mesodebris raptors; 3) identify sentinel monitoring understudied freshwater terrestrial (inland) environments. Between 2020-2022, 457 free-ranging across 52 received postmortem examination. upper gastrointestinal tracts examined other debris (>2 mm) using standard techniques. Twenty-four individuals (5.3%) retained prevalence varied species, with foraging technique, food type, substrate all associated different metrics ingestion. odds ingesting any type anthropogenic was nine times higher non-raptorial than raptors. For subset raptors (N = 54) 14 terminal portion distal intestinal tract digested potassium hydroxide microparticles assessed stereo-microscopy. Although only one 54 (1.9%) included both analyses tract, 24 (44.4%) contained intestine. This demonstrates that variety Canadian bird ingest inland systems, suggests life history behaviour risk. raptors, mechanisms governing exposure appear be those govern microplastics. The ubiquitous and global ecological footprint arising from the rapidly increasing rates of plastic production, use, release into environment is an important modern environmental issue. Of concern are risks associated with at least 16,000 chemicals present in plastics, some which known to be toxic, may leach out both during use once exposed conditions, leading human exposure. In response, United Nations member states agreed establish international legally binding instrument on pollution, plastics treaty. resolution acknowledges that treaty should prevent pollution its related impacts, effective prevention requires consideration transboundary nature full life cycle must addressed. As a group scientific experts members Scientists' Coalition for Effective Plastics Treaty, we concur there six essential "pillars" necessary truly reduce allow chemical detoxification across plastics.
