Soils co-contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons (PHs) and heavy metals pose significant challenges, such as reduced bioavailability of pollutants, toxic effects on soil microorganisms, unpredictable chemical interactions. These complex interactions hinder effective remediation. Phytoremediation, which utilizes plant microbial processes, offers a sustainable eco-friendly approach. However, its effectiveness is often constrained by the intricate interplay among PHs, metals, components, complicates pollutant degradation activity. This review explores between enhancement strategies, including amendments, growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB), genetic engineering, can synergistically enhance remediation efficiency. Key challenges include competition for adsorption sites contaminants, community disruptions, environmental variability. Persistent, aged hydrocarbons in soil hinder remediation, posing a significant environmental threat. While bioremediation offers an environmentally friendly and cost-effective approach, its efficacy for complex contaminants relies on enhancing pollutant bioavailability. This study explores the potential of immobilized bacterial consortia combined with biochar rhamnolipids to accelerate total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH)-contaminated soil. Previous research indicates that biosurfactants can increase rates, while mixed offer sequential degradation higher mineralization. The present investigation aimed assess whether combining these strategies could further enhance aged, matrices. bioaugmentation (BA) consortium increased TPHs (over 20% compared natural attenuation - NA). Blast furnace slag (BFS) is a secondary material generated during the process of producing iron in blast furnaces, prompting scholars to concentrate on its efficient management and broad application for creation valuable commodities. This study examines mineral composition, adsorption characteristics, utilization BFS silica counterparts. Recent developments functionalized materials pollution mitigation are examined, specifically concentrating elimination nitrogen, phosphorus, metal ions, pharmaceutical effluents, waste oils, dye molecules from wastewater. As global concerns about climate change intensify, the need for effective strategies to reduce carbon emissions, has never been more urgent. This review paper explores crucial role of digital technologies (i.e., data automation (DA) and decision support systems (DSSs)) in enhancing making achieving a ZERONET initiative (decarbonation efforts) within realms solid waste management (SWM), wastewater treatment (WWT), contaminated soil remediation (CSR).
