Abstract Nature‐based solutions (NbS, and related concepts like natural infrastructure, Ecosystem‐based Adaptation, green infrastructure) are increasingly recognized as multi‐benefit strategies for addressing the critical sustainability challenges of Anthropocene, including climate emergency biodiversity crisis. Mainstreaming NbS in professional practice requires strategic, landscape‐level planning integrating multiple sources benefits their synergies trade‐offs. Levee setbacks (LS) among best‐studied riverine with flood risk management, drought resilience, water quality recreational opportunities, ecological restoration biodiversity. Although awareness multifarious LS forms Natural Capital is growing, implementation remains ad‐hoc opportunistic. To address this gap one major example NbS, we review synthesize literature across diverse disciplines to provide an overview primary social, economic, mechanisms that affect co‐benefit delivery projects. Next, make information relevant practitioners, link these spatial metrics can be used approximate relative magnitude project costs mechanisms. Finally, highlight examples key trade‐offs should considered planning. This synthetic approach intended familiarize readers potential LS, understanding how select prioritize sites further study implementation. Synergies important benefit drivers abound, social equity concerns will paramount ensuring successful other future. article categorized under: Engineering Water > Sustainable Planning Life Nature Freshwater Ecosystems

Ecosystem services provide substantial benefits to people, but the underlying ecosystems are under unprecedented pressure, compromising service delivery. Therefore, ecosystem need be integrated into conservation and management processes secure their for current future generations. A key first step is a robust method map spatial planning. We aimed develop apply broadly applicable, flexible spatially accurate comprehensive mapping using Ecological Infrastructure, abbreviated PROPSER. evaluated demand, flow, capacity of three (sports events, recreation, coastal protection) along South African coast causal relationships, including ecological condition EI, approximated EI performance as measure its importance society. This resulted in high-resolution per cumulative multiple-service created by integrating single-service maps. Altogether, there were 5127 sites, with close urban nodes being most important. Post-hoc tests confirmed accuracy output maps, sensitivity PROPSER variables components indicator models. PROSPER innovative that can widely applied. The outputs from this study have been taken up national planning process, several other applications discussed. identify seven ways which advanced, encourage further testing application our approach.

Abstract The concept of ecological infrastructure (EI) as a lens for landscape management has the potential to address environmental challenges, such biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation, by instrumentalizing Nature’s Contributions People (NCP). NCPs stems from Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity Ecosystem Services (IPBES) refers various ways in which natural world provides benefits, values, services that directly indirectly contribute well-being, livelihoods, cultural aspects human societies. This research explores this proposing an archetype analysis social-ecological-technological systems (SETS) manage EI. We derived archetypes using machine learning clustering data-driven SETS framework co-produced with experts EI management. was conducted combining K-means hierarchical spatial patterns generate clusters similar configurations social, ecological, technological subsystems. approach is illustrated canton Geneva, Switzerland, experiences high urbanization pressures. resulting spatially explicit facilitate policy recommendations tailored multifunctional landscapes, can be used derive coherent strategies In addition, demonstrates taking integrated engaging diverse stakeholders, it possible develop effective landscape-based promoting sustainable provision within

Nature plays a crucial role in providing ecosystem services (ESs) essential for human wellbeing and biodiversity conservation rural areas. However, existing paradigms often lack an integrative approach towards livelihoods wellbeing, highlighting the need comprehensive understanding of relationship between (HWB) ESs. The area around Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area (GLTFCA) offers such ESs to indigenous people who rely heavily on these natural resources. Thus, this study aimed quantify people's perceptions cultural provisioning their link villages adjacent GLTFCA. Key informant interviews were initially conducted identify as perceived by participants. Subsequently, face-to-face surveys carried out 9 wards across South Africa Zimbabwe, involving 350 Respondents asked about availability ESs, levels degradation, drivers change, impact wellbeing. Responses captured using Likert scales, multiple regression models analysed relationships socio-demographic characteristics Results indicated that both be available but degrading, with degrading more rapidly. Climate legislation/policies, poverty identified key change. Socio-demographic factors gender, nativeness, employment level influenced Overall, participants reported contribute through life satisfaction, happiness, living standards, safety, security, good health. Finally, study's findings uniquely offer baseline accounting, demonstrating direct indirect benefits communities' well-being.

Ecosystem service assessments are crucial for sustainable water area management. Previous studies and actions on waterfront management often emphasized merely the saving use of resources per se, ignoring safeguarding hydrological source ecosystems assurance provision capacity supplies. Using Yangtze River Delta Ecological Green Integration Demonstration Zone (demonstration zone) as an example, this study integrated ecosystem assessment into in urbanizing region. We evaluated mapped four services—carbon sequestration, purification, stormwater regulation climate regulation—in demonstration zone 2020. examined quantities, spatial distributions economic values to inform policy balancing development environment. Our results show that services provide significant benefits areas: furnished substantial services, sequestering 544,900 tons atmospheric carbon dioxide (USD 2.03 million), eliminating total material quantities nitrogen phosphorus pollution 47,700 13,900 66.31 billion USD 20.17 billion, respectively), retaining over 467.48 million cubic meters runoff 1756.35 million) quantity amounts 65.13 kilowatt hours 5.10 billion). However, these provisions varied spatially. Wujiang District provided most overall, while Qingpu had highest per-unit intensities regulation. Policy, planning action should consider providing security prosperity. Managing trade-offs between environment, reducing risks cultivating resilience necessitates potential.
