Abstract
Background
The
levels
of
trace
elements
and
Metallothioneins
(MTs)
could
play
a
key
role
in
modulating
the
inflammatory
reaction
pathogenesis
COVID-19.
Their
effects
on
clinical
variables
are
interest
for
characterization
management
this
disease.
Thus,
present
study
aimed
to
investigate
association
between
circulating
Iron
(Fe),
Zinc
(Zn),
Copper
(Cu),
Manganese
(Mn),
MTs
levels,
as
well
their
relationship
with
clinical,
biochemical,
parameters
critical
care
patients
COVID-19
at
early
Intensive
Care
Unit
(ICU)
phase.
Methods
A
total
86
critically
ill
were
monitored
from
first
day
admission
ICU
until
third
stay.
Clinical
retrieved
hospital
database.
Biochemical
analyzed
following
enzymatic
colorimetry
immunoassay
procedures.
Serum
samples
used
assess
mineral
by
inductively
coupled
plasma-mass
spectrometry
differential
pulse
voltammetric.
Results

Here,
we
review
role
in
different
steps
SARS-CoV-2
pathogenesis
identify
lipid-centric
targetable
avenues.
We
discuss
lipidome
changes

patients

relevance
as
potential
clinical
diagnostic
or
prognostic
biomarkers.

Given

In
recent
months,
the
current
COVID-19
pandemic
has
generated
thousands
of
studies
directly
or
indirectly
related
with
this
disease
and/or
coronavirus
SARS-CoV-2
causing
infection.
On
August
22,
2022,
database
PUBMED
included
287,639
publications
containing
term
COVID-19.
However,
in
spite

trace
elements
human
health,
including
immune
system,
data
on
levels
metals/metalloids
patients
is
very
limited.The
concentrations

plasma-mass
spectrometry
