Abstract Background The levels of trace elements and Metallothioneins (MTs) could play a key role in modulating the inflammatory reaction pathogenesis COVID-19. Their effects on clinical variables are interest for characterization management this disease. Thus, present study aimed to investigate association between circulating Iron (Fe), Zinc (Zn), Copper (Cu), Manganese (Mn), MTs levels, as well their relationship with clinical, biochemical, parameters critical care patients COVID-19 at early Intensive Care Unit (ICU) phase. Methods A total 86 critically ill were monitored from first day admission ICU until third stay. Clinical retrieved hospital database. Biochemical analyzed following enzymatic colorimetry immunoassay procedures. Serum samples used assess mineral by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry differential pulse voltammetric. Results Levels Cu decreased (all P ≤ 0.046) after 3 days stay, increasing prevalence deficient values 50–65.3% (P = 0.015) Fe Zn shown have predictive value mortality severity. Changes directly related changes Mn r ≥ 0.266; 0.019). In contrast, inversely albumin r≥–0.255; 0.039). Conclusions indicated risk element deficiencies different biochemical parameters. We suggest monitoring status performing nutritional interventions, when appropriate, that help improve altered parameters, such conditions and, thus, prognosis

The COVID-19 pandemic ignited research centered around the identification of robust biomarkers and therapeutic targets. SARS-CoV-2, virus responsible, hijacks metabolic machinery host cells. It relies on lipids lipoproteins cells for entry, trafficking, immune evasion, viral replication, exocytosis. infection causes cell lipid remodelling. Targeting lipid-based processes is thus a promising strategy countering COVID-19. Here, we review role in different steps SARS-CoV-2 pathogenesis identify lipid-centric targetable avenues. We discuss lipidome changes infected patients their relevance as potential clinical diagnostic or prognostic biomarkers. summarize emerging direct indirect approaches targeting using lipid-inspired approaches. Given that protein-targeted therapies may become less effective due to mutations variants, interventions provide additional perhaps better means combating this future pandemics.

In recent months, the current COVID-19 pandemic has generated thousands of studies directly or indirectly related with this disease and/or coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 causing infection. On August 22, 2022, database PUBMED included 287,639 publications containing term COVID-19. However, in spite importance trace elements human health, including immune system, data on levels metals/metalloids patients is very limited. The concentrations As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Fe, Mg, Mn, Pb, Se, V and Zn were determined by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) 126 serum samples individuals infected SARS-CoV-2, as well 88 non-infected individuals. Participants divided into four groups: i) positive (COVID-19 +) an asymptomatic infection course; ii) suffering mild COVID-19; iii) severe COVID-19, iv) negative (COVID-19-) (control group). The occurrence analyzed was evaluated along biochemical profile, blood cell counts, lipids, proteins crucial enzymes.Serum V, Pb higher than those control group. Although no significant differences observed between different groups patients, showed a tendency to be showing symptoms being asymptomatic. Arsenic Hg rarely detected, regardless if subjects not. results did not show rest according severity (asymptomatic, severe). In here obtained, we highlight need reduce exposure minimize potential adverse health outcomes after other hand, although protective role essential found, Mg Cu

Damage to cellular macromolecules such as DNA and lipid, induced via reactive oxygen species, indicators of cell proliferation potential insulin-like growth factor (IGF) metabolic status are intermediate biomarkers breast cancer risk. Based on reports that selenium can affect these markers, a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind experiment was conducted investigate the supplementation modulate Using placebo tablet or containing 200 μg provided high-selenium yeast daily for one year, concentrations in blood urine were assessed at baseline after 6 12 months intervention. The intervention used this study is presumed mediate its effect induction glutathione peroxidase activity consequential impact active form protein oxidative damage. We found no evidence support hypothesis indicate systemic IGF affected. Critical knowledge gaps must be addressed resurgence interest garner clinical relevance. Those include identification specific, high-affinity metabolite target(s) which it binds, demonstration determinant binds plays critical role initiation, promotion, progression specific type cancer.
