Abstract Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been strongly associated with thrombotic complications, particularly pulmonary embolism (PE). This study aims to analyze the real-world impact of COVID-19 on PE-related mortality in United States over first 5 years pandemic. We conducted a retrospective observational using CDC WONDER database, combining data from PE and 10th revision International Classification Diseases (ICD-10) codes I26 (PE) U07.1 (COVID-19). The analysis spanned 2020 2024. found peak COVID-19-associated deaths 2021, an estimated crude rate 211 × 1,000 deaths. progressively declined following years, being 141 2022, 44 2023, 29 2024, respectively. for was 111 throughout 5-year period. results our show that may have contributed nearly one-tenth all Despite gradual decline since its still sustained suggests ongoing risks, especially impacting high-risk populations, emphasizing need continued vigilance prevention complications patients.

Abstract Catastrophic thrombosis is a severe condition characterized by hypercoagulable tendency, leading to multiple thromboembolic events in different blood vessels, usually within short timeframe. Several conditions have been associated with the development of catastrophic thrombosis, including antiphospholipid syndrome, thrombotic anti-platelet factor 4 immune disorders, microangiopathies, cancers, hyper-eosinophilic pregnancy, infections, trauma, and drugs. Thrombotic storm represents medical emergency whose management serious challenge for physicians. Besides prompt start anticoagulation, patient's prognosis depends on early recognition possible treatment underlying condition. In this narrative review, we summarize main characteristics analyzing various triggering such life-threatening complication. Finally, an algorithm diagnostic workup initial patients presented.

The past few decades have brought tremendous insight into the molecular and pathophysiological mechanisms responsible for thrombus generation. For a clinician, it is usually sufficient to explain incident of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) with provoking factors such as trauma vascular injury, immobilization, hormonal factors, or inherited acquired coagulation defects. About half DVTs are, however, lacking triggers are called unprovoked. Venous stasis hypoxia at valve sinus level may start chain reactions. concept immunothrombosis has added new dimension old etiological triad venous stasis, vessel wall changes in blood components. This particularly important COVID-19, where hyperinflammation, cytokines, neutrophil extracellular traps associated formation microthrombi lungs. To better understand behind DVT reach beyond above-mentioned simplifications, animal models clinical epidemiological studies complex interplay between leukocytes, platelets, endothelium, complements, inhibitors. These pathways will be reviewed here, well roles cancer, anticancer drugs, congenital thrombophilic defects on hypercoagulability thromboembolism.
