Despite its toxic potential, the treatment of wastewaters generated at veterinary hospitals has been neglected. Thus, this is a pioneering study that addresses effluent through an integrated system composed upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB), anoxic filter (AF), aerobic reactor (AR), thickener tank (STT) horizontal flow subsurface constructed wetland (HFSSCW) and parshall gutter (PG) with hydraulic retention time 10 days. Approximately 5 m³ wastewater produced daily, antibiotics analgesics being most commonly used classes pharmaceutical compounds. Several analyzed parameters did not comply national international guidelines. In context, demonstrated good results, achieving mean removals of: 98% for COD 59% BOD5; 87.5% Total N 44% P; 83.8% 69.9% DOC TDC; 95% 65% Turbidity EC; 78% TDS. The bioassays Allium cepa indicated strong genotoxic potential raw wastewater, which was completely eliminated after treatment. it can be concluded showed promising results regarding investigated considered viable alternative to meet disposal limits established in Brazilian standards, as well significantly reduce their potential.

Recently, the spread of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in aquatic environment has steadily increased. In this study, phytoremediation technology, using an ornamental plant (Alternanthera spp.), was investigated to improve removal acetaminophen (AC) methylparaben (MP) from a synthetically prepared wastewater. Three exposure lines (AC-line, MP-line control-line) were performed with total 26 subsurface-horizontal constructed wetlands (SSH-CWs) that operated batch feeding mode. The influence plants addition initial spiking concentration (20, 60 100 mg/L) AC MP on efficiency evaluated throughout 35-days experiments. highest efficiencies for 88.6% 66.4%, respectively, achieved planted CWs; whereas only 29.7% 21.9% control CWs MP, respectively. results confirmed role Alternanthera spp. accelerating contaminated wastewater CWs.
