Constructed wetlands (CWs) can play a crucial role in treating wastewater, and the context of this study, distillation byproduct whisky industry known as 'spent lees'. Here, we assess several different CW substrates (pea gravel, LECA Alfagrog), with without addition 20% biochar, mesocosms set up to treat spent lees. Among tested, + biochar gravel showed promising results, greater dissolved copper (dissCu) reduction, chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal, organic carbon (OC) pH modulation. These findings indicate potentially beneficial for enhancing treatment efficacy, particularly facilitating dissCu remediation removal pollutants. In terms microbial diversity, including generally had reduced bacterial alpha suggesting that 'fresh' (uncolonized) may negatively affect diversity wetland ecosystems short term. After continuously supplying lees 2-months, each mesocosm dropped substantially, moderate levels community differentiation high fungal were detected among mesocosms. The communities also found differ between substrate outlet water samples. classes present performance, Gammaproteobacteria, Bacteroidia Alphaproteobacteria should be further investigated. classes, Sordariomycetes explored depth.
