Abstract Urban vegetation plays a crucial role in regulating temperatures and heat waves urban areas. However, the influence of coverage its configuration on surface different climate zones at national scale is unclear. To address this, we utilized high-resolution data to detect spatial patterns for 31 provincial capital cities China. We integrated day night determine vegetative across city sizes. Our study revealed that subtropical monsoon medium-sized had highest shape complexity. The best connectivity agglomeration were found temperate large cities. In contrast, small cities, especially those under continental climate, low coverage, high fragmentation, weak connectivity. addition, negative impact daytime temperatures, climate. an increase could result warming climates. Although also contributed moderating night, they did not surpass coverage. effect nighttime increased by 3–6% relative contribution interaction cooling efficiency decreased 3–5%. this identified several effects natural social factors relationship between temperatures. High duration sunshine, humidity wind speed significantly enhanced was more pronounced population density gross domestic product. This enhances understanding ecological functions provides valuable scientific basis strategic recommendations optimizing improving environmental quality.
