Health considerations are seldom integrated into non-state voluntary sustainability certification standards, despite industrial fishing being one of the most hazardous occupations, often resulting in significant health risks for fishers. These challenges not only affect individual fishers but also have broader implications socio-ecological fisheries. This study explores effects programs on activities and their safety dimensions within a framework, focusing Atlantic shrimp fishery Nigeria. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining qualitative quantitative data collection techniques. Data were gathered from experienced employees Friend Sea (FOS) certified non-certified (Business-as-Usual, BAU) fisheries through questionnaires, complemented by semi-structured interviews with selected key informants. The examines relationships between demographic variables, health-related indicators, program participation using multivariate analyses, including Chi-square standard logistic regression models. findings revealed that participating FOS reported better conditions, lower risks, higher insurance coverage levels than BAU counterparts. Certified had greater access to sick leave annual days off more likely be physically fit work. Conversely, group faced significantly casualty rates during operations. results underscore critical role health-focused programs, such as FOS, improving well-being fishers, thereby enhancing Nigeria's industry. highlights importance integrating standards. By prioritizing fisher's well-being, contribute sustainable management resources environmental protection, aligning principles One framework.

The study examined health safety issues among semi-intensive shrimp farmers in southwestern Bangladesh. assessed farmers’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) on during their farm activities. KAP model working circumstances, exposures, complaints, diseases, current status, job satisfaction. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with 158 from Bangladesh’s Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat districts. Type-based data analysis was done. We used Spearman’s rank correlation multiple linear regression. Only 35% of respondents said that they knew the chemicals pesticides farms training is needed, all wanted to attend when available. At least 74% masks handling pesticides, fertilizers, chemicals. 40.50% protective clothing, 91% cleansed hands, legs, face after each day’s work, 94% felt sanitization reduces pesticide, fertilizer, chemical pollution. A significant positive coefficient established KAP. Education significantly increased knowledge. Practices varied training. Results suggest attitudes determine practices, where knowledge associated attitudes. comprehensive hygiene program for should be developed raise awareness, reduce illness outbreaks, preserve healthy living.

Abstract This paper proposes to establish Maximum Sustainable Employment (MSE) as a new guiding light, or beacon, for wild fisheries governance. social beacon complements the directives provided by prevailing beacons: Yield (MSY) and Economic (MEY). The argument is that context matters: in countries where poverty levels are high alternative employment scarce, governors cannot limit themselves sectoral perspective. Instead, they must include remunerative ‘decent work’ offer society their strategic deliberations. perspective especially relevant Global South, but it also has bearing on North. After discussing history of scientific management relevance fisheries, considers arguments made against MSE. It concludes with reflection balancing three beacons line circumstances.
