Abstract
Anguillid
eels
have
seen
precipitous
declines
in
their
population
sizes.
Because
of
these
declines,
a
number
are
currently
designated
as
Endangered,
Critically
or
listed
on
Convention
International
Trade
Endangered
Species
Appendix
II.
While
the
export
critically
endangered
Anguilla
anguilla
outside
European
Union
is
tightly
regulated,
large
quantities
A.
juveniles
continue
to
be
smuggled
out
EU
Asia
where
they
grown
eel
farms
until
reaching
marketable
size.
To
investigate
prevalence
and
consumption
anguillids—particularly
—we
examined
327
individual
products
purchased
across
86
retailers
throughout
Singapore.
Identification
was
conducted
through
DNA
barcoding
COI
gene.
We
overwhelmingly
identified
American
eel,
rostrata
,
which
accounted
for
70%
all
identifications
made,
while
only
three
times.
These
findings
may
indicate
shift
trade
.
This
highlights
need
improved
monitoring
trade,
particularly
more
desirable
anguillids.

suggest
that
warrants
specific
attention,
with
increased
enforcement
needed
proactive
steps
necessary

The
population
of
the
Northern
temperate
eel
species
(Anguilla
spp.)
has
undergone
a
significant
decline,
resulting
in
their
classification
as
Endangered
(American
Anguilla
rostrata
and
Japanese
japonica)
or
Critically
(European
anguilla)
by
IUCN.The
growing
global
demand
for
cuisine
processed
products
could
potentially
exacerbate
vulnerability
these
species.This
research
examines
acceptability
conservation
policies
among
consumers.A
discrete
choice
experiment
was
employed
to
investigate
social
acceptance
target
levels
national
consumption
reduction
examine
trade-offs
made
individuals
between
various
policy
instruments
(e.g.,
combat
against
illegal
trade,
on
artificial
reproduction,
shift
substitute
species,
public
awareness
campaigns,
eco-labelling)
costs
that
they
may
be
willing
incur.The
econometric
analysis
identified
two
distinct
groups
with
contrasting
preferences.The
first
group
exhibited
strong
support
current
situation.Conversely,
second
expressed
preferences
expanding
intervention.We
further
explored
sources
heterogeneity.Paradoxically,
we
found
education
attainment
environmental
knowledge
relation
motivations
influenced
individual
status
quo.However,
higher
proenvironmental
attitudes
are
more
likely
accept
reduction.They
pay
demand-oriented
complement
existing
supply-side
measures.

ecological,
cultural
and
economic
importance

freshwater
eels,
coupled
with
declining
wild
populations,
drives
the
need

propagation

To pool or not to pool data? Applying a generalized depletion model to assess American eel elver Anguilla rostrata fisheries from multiple rivers in Nova Scotia, Canada

Abstract
Spatial
scales
are
important
for
examining
health
of
exploited
fishery
stocks
and
guiding
management
actions.
However,
information
about
the
optimal
spatial
scale
is
still
unclear
assessment

a
generalized
depletion
model
to
assess
catch
effort
data
from
three
nearby
rivers
(within
50
km)
test
hypothesis
that
modeling

pooled

pooling
within

did
not
result
in
large
differences
(<20%
relative
difference)
rate
with
close
mean
temporal
trends
abundance,
