An aggregation-induced emission (AIE) active Schiff base L was obtained by reacting pyridoxal and 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde with p-phenylenediamine in two simple steps. The colorimetric, UV/VIS fluorescence studies of revealed that the yellow emissive (λem =540 nm, λex =450 nm) pure DMSO turned to a red-emissive L, when poor solvent fraction (HEPES buffer, 10 mM, pH 7.4) increased above 50 % DMSO. SEM DLS results indicated formation self-aggregates restricted intramolecular motion promoted excited state proton transfer (ESIPT) process. cations sensing ability AIEgen explored HEPES buffer (5 DMSO, 7.4), where Cu2+ selectively quenched at 608 nm due chelation-enhanced quenching (CHEQ) effect an estimated sensitivity limit 0.9 μM. Subsequently, situ formed L-Cu2+ complex applied for cascade detection glutathione (GSH), cysteine (Cys) homocysteine (Hcy). decomplexation from GSH, Cys Hcy restored nm. With this displacement approach, concentration Cys, GSH can be detected down 2.8 μM, 3.12 μM 2.0 respectively. practical utility examined monitoring selective analytes real environmental biological samples, also successfully cell imaging applications.
