A growing body of evidence clearly indicates the beneficial effects physical activity (PA) on cognition. The importance PA is now being reevaluated due to increase in sedentary behavior older adults during COVID-19 pandemic. Although many studies humans have revealed that helps preserve brain health, underlying mechanisms not yet been fully elucidated. In this review, which mainly focuses humans, we comprehensively summarize or exercise particularly most intensively studied involve an brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and preservation volume, especially hippocampus. Nonetheless, mutual associations between these two factors remain unclear. For example, although BDNF presumably affects volume by inhibiting neuronal death and/or increasing neurogenesis, human data issue are scarce. It also remains be determined whether modulates amyloid tau metabolism. However, recent advances blood-based biomarkers expected help elucidate brain. Clinical suggest functionally cognition independently neurodegeneration, involved include modulation functional connectivity, compensation, resource allocation, efficiency. as understood. clear understanding could motivate inactive persons change their behavior. More accumulation field awaited.

Emerging evidence suggests that exercise is a simple and effective method for maintaining brain function. This review evaluates the effects of five physical exercises, including aerobic training (AT), high-intensity interval (HIIT), combined (CT), resistance (RT), AT+RT, on serum level brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in healthy non-healthy populations. We searched CNKI, PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Medline, Web Science, Cochrane Library databases to randomized controlled studies interventions BDNF. Quantitative merging analysis resulting data using Bayesian network meta-analysis.The screening exclusion literature resulted inclusion 39 trials containing 5 with total 2031 subjects. The AT, RT, HIIT, CT groups (intervention groups) CG group (conventional control group) were assigned 451, 236, 102, 84, 293, 865 subjects, respectively. meta-analysis ranked effect BDNF improvement subjects as follows: RT > HIIT AT+RT AT CG. Better outcomes observed all intervention than group, having most significant [MD = 3.11 (0.33, 5.76), p < 0.05].RT at moderate intensity recommended children older adults case tolerance or modulating levels promoting health.https://inplasy.com, INPLASY202250164.

Neuroprotective factors are involved in brain functioning. Although physical exercise has been shown to have a positive influence on these factors, the effect of resistance them is not well known. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed 1) estimate efficacy major neuroprotective such as insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), vascular endothelial (VEGF), middle late life 2) determine whether dose dependent. A search was conducted CINAHL, Cochrane CENTRAL, MEDLINE, Scopus, PEDro, SPORTDiscus, Web Science up November 2022. Random effects models were used standardized mean differences (SMDs) their respective 95% confidence intervals (CI) for peripheral IGF-1, BDNF or VEGF levels older adults. Thirty randomized clinical trials with 1247 subjects (53.25% women, 45-92 years) included review, 27 selected meta-analysis. significant IGF-1 observed (SMD: 0.48; CI: 0.27, 0.69), being more effective when performing 3 sessions/week 0.55; 0.31, 0.79) but 0.33; -0.29, 0.94). The could be determined due scarcity studies. Our data support training recommendation life, at frequency least sessions/week, mitigate neurological cognitive consequences associated aging, mainly through IGF-1.
