Breathing plays a critical role not only in homeostatic survival, but also modulating other non-interoceptive perceptual and affective processes. Recent evidence from both human rodent models indicates that neural behavioural oscillations are influenced by respiratory state as breathing cycles inspiration to expiration. To explore the mechanisms behind these effects, we carried out psychophysical experiment where 41 participants categorised dot motion facial emotion stimuli standardised discrimination task. When comparing behaviour across states, found accelerated responses domains. We applied hierarchical accumulation model determine which aspects of latent decision process best explained this acceleration. Computational modelling showed reduced evidential boundaries, such prioritised speed over accuracy In contrast, shifted starting point accumulation, inducing bias towards categorising expressions more positive. These findings provide novel computational account how modulate distinct decision-dynamics.

Respiration and cardiac activity intricately interact through complex physiological mechanisms. The heartbeat-evoked potential (HEP) is an EEG fluctuation reflecting the cortical processing of signals. We recently found higher HEP amplitude during exhalation than inhalation a task involving attention to sensations. This may have been due reduced perception heightened attentional To investigate relationships between HEP, attention, respiration, we introduced experimental setup that included tasks related respiratory interoceptive exteroceptive attention. Results revealed increases over fronto-central electrodes. When phases were taken into account, primarily driven by heartbeats recorded exhalation, specifically task, while had minimal impact. These findings emphasize role respiration in could implications for interventions fine-tune interoception.

Sensory–cognitive functions are intertwined with physiological processes such as the heart beat or respiration. For example, we tend to align our respiratory cycle expected events actions. This happens during sports but also in computer-based tasks and systematically structures phase around relevant events. However, studies show that trial-by-trial variations shape brain activity speed accuracy of individual responses. We both phenomena—the alignment respiration explanatory power on behaviour—co-exist. In fact, average an relative experimental trials trial-to-trial hold significant predictive behavioural performance, particular for reaction times. co-modulation behaviour emerges regardless whether generally breathes faster slower is strongest about 2 s prior participant’s The persistence these effects across 12 datasets 277 participants performing sensory–cognitive confirms robustness results, suggests a profound time-lagged influence structured sensory–motor

Each organism must regulate its internal state in a metabolically efficient way as it interacts space and time with an ever-changing only partly predictable world. Success this endeavor is largely determined by the ongoing communication between brain body, vagus nerve crucial structure that dialogue. In review, we introduce novel hypothesis afferent engaged signal processing rather than just relay. New genetic structural evidence of vagal fiber anatomy motivates two hypotheses: (1) sensory signals informing on physiological body compute both spatial temporal viscerosensory features they ascend nerve, following patterns found other architectures, such visual olfactory systems; (2) ascending descending modulate one another, calling into question strict segregation motor signals, respectively. Finally, discuss several implications our hypotheses for understanding role predictive energy regulation (i.e., allostasis) well metabolic memory disorders prediction (e.g., mood disorders).

Coupling of sleep spindles with cortical slow waves and hippocampus sharp-waves ripples is crucial for sleep-related memory consolidation. Recent literature evidenced that nasal respiration modulates neural activity in large-scale brain networks. In rodents, this respiratory drive strongly varies according to vigilance states. Whether oscillations are also respiration-modulated humans remains open. work, we investigated the influence breathing on during non-rapid-eye-movement humans. Full night polysomnography twenty healthy participants were analysed. Spindles automatically detected N2 N3 stages. Spindle-related sigma power as well spindle wave events analysed phase. We found a significant coupling between both fast cycle, enhanced occurrence probability middle part expiration A different was observed negative peaks which rather distributed around two phase transitions. We highlight role playing a coordinating tripartite alignment activity, input dynamics across longer timescales like minutes.
