Electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) stand as state-of-the-art techniques for non-invasive neuroimaging. On a unimodal basis, EEG has poor spatial resolution while presenting high temporal resolution. In contrast, fNIRS offers better resolution, though it is constrained by its One important merit shared the that both modalities have favorable portability could be integrated into compatible experimental setup, providing compelling ground development of multimodal fNIRS-EEG integration analysis approach. Despite growing number studies using concurrent designs reported in recent years, methodological reference past remains unclear. To fill this knowledge gap, review critically summarizes status methods currently used studies, an up-to-date overview guideline future projects to conduct studies. A literature search was conducted PubMed Web Science through 31 August 2021. After screening qualification assessment, 92 involving data recordings analyses were included final review. Specifically, three categories analyses, including EEG-informed fNIRS-informed parallel identified explained with detailed description. Hyperscanning is a form of neuroimaging experiment where the brains two or more participants are imaged simultaneously whilst they interact. Within domain social neuroscience, hyperscanning increasingly used to measure inter-brain coupling (IBC) and explore how brain responses change in tandem during interaction. In addition cognitive research, some have suggested that quantification interplay between interacting can be as biomarker for variety mechanisms aswell investigate mental health developmental conditions including schizophrenia, anxiety autism. However, many different methods been quantify this lead questions about comparability across studies reduce research reproducibility. Here, we review quantifying IBC, suggest ways moving forward. Following PRISMA guidelines, reviewed 215 studies, four imaging modalities: functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), magnetic resonance (fMRI), electroencephalography (EEG) magnetoencephalography (MEG). Overall, identified total 27 compute IBC. The most common modality fNIRS, by 119 89 which adopted wavelet coherence. A growing number of social interactions are taking place virtually on videoconferencing platforms. Here, we explore potential effects virtual observed behavior, subjective experience, and neural "single-brain" "interbrain" activity via functional near-infrared spectroscopy neuroimaging. We scanned a total 36 human dyads (72 participants, males, females) who engaged in three naturalistic tasks (i.e., problem-solving, creative-innovation, socio-emotional task) either an in-person or (Zoom) condition. also coded cooperative behavior from audio recordings. reduced conversational turn-taking during the Given that was associated with other metrics positive interaction (e.g., cooperation task performance), this measure may be indicator prosocial interaction. In addition, altered patterns averaged dynamic interbrain coherence interactions. Interbrain were characteristic condition turn-taking. These insights can inform design engineering next generation technology.

Inter-brain synchronization during social interaction has been linked with several positive phenomena, including closeness, cooperation, prosociality, and team performance. However, the temporal dynamics of inter-brain collaboration are not yet fully understood. Furthermore, increasingly happening online, dependence phase oscillatory activity on physical presence is an important but understudied question. In this study, physically isolated participants performed a collaborative coordination task in form cooperative multiplayer game. We measured EEG from 42 subjects working together as pairs task. During measurement, only between happened through on-screen movement racing car, controlled by button presses both distinct roles, either controlling speed or direction car. Pairs were found to have elevated neural coupling alpha, beta, gamma frequency bands, compared performance matched false pairs. Higher synchrony was associated better momentary within dyads higher alpha mean across dyads. These results line previous findings increased interaction, show that occurs online real-time joint without any co-presence video audio connection. Synchrony decreased playing session, be second session first. The novel paradigm, developed for measurement performance, demonstrates changes can observed continuously interaction.

Abstract How does co-presence change our neural experience of the world? Can a conversation how we synchronise with partner during later events? Using fNIRS hyperscanning, measured brain activity from 27 pairs familiar adults simultaneously over frontal, temporal and parietal regions bilaterally, as they co-watched two different episodes short cartoon. In-between episodes, each pair engaged in face-to-face on topics unrelated to cartoon episodes. Brain synchrony was calculated using wavelet transform coherence computed separately for real shuffled pseudo) pairs. Findings reveal that showed increased right Dorso-Lateral Pre-Frontal cortex (DLPFC) Superior Parietal Lobe (SPL), compared pseudo (who had never seen other watched same movie at times; uncorrected multiple comparisons). In addition, co-watching after associated greater TPJ before conversation, this effect significantly higher other) someone else; The present study has shed light role social interaction modulating across people not just interaction, but even subsequent non-social activities. These results have implications growing domain naturalistic neuroimaging interactive neuroscience.

Interpersonal emotion regulation (IER) refers to the dynamic process where a regulator employs specific strategies alleviate target's distress. It remains unclear whether successful IER could facilitate interpersonal relationship closeness (IRC). The present study aimed explore IER, based on two typical strategies-cognitive reappraisal (CR) and expressive suppression (ES)-for down-regulating negative emotions, enhance IRC among friend dyads, identify underlying neural correlates of this using functional near-infrared spectroscopy system. Seventy-four female dyads (friends) were randomly assigned one strategy groups (CR vs. ES), with participant as target other regulator. Our finds revealed that both have down-regulated however, CR was associated more outcomes (more improvement targets' emotions; higher IRC) than ES strategy. recruited enhanced brain synchronization (IBS) prefrontal temporal areas dyads.
