White matter plasticity occurs throughout life due to learning and can be a protective factor against as well vulnerability for the development of mental disorders. In this systematic review we summarize findings on structural white changes in children adults with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) relate them theoretical accounts pathophysiology PTSD focus disturbed processing contexts associated problems emotional cognitive symptomatology. We particularly examine studies reporting fractional anisotropy (FA) measured diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). further subdivided adult-onset traumatic experience adulthood, childhood PTSD. included 30 comprising almost 1700 participants 450 300 suffering from Our showed that trauma, decrease FA corpus collosum, most prominently anterior posterior midbody, isthmus splenium were reported. For part cingulum, superior longitudinal fasciculus frontal regions found. Using GingerAle, also performed coordinate-based meta-analysis 14 adulthood did not find any significant clusters. results suggest microstructure vary depending are brain circuits related contexts. Finally, present methodological considerations future studies.

Oligodendrocytes are the myelinating cells of central nervous system (CNS) that generated from oligodendrocyte progenitor (OPC). OPC distributed throughout CNS and represent a pool migratory proliferative adult can differentiate into oligodendrocytes. The function oligodendrocytes is to generate myelin, which an extended membrane cell wraps tightly around axons. Due this energy consuming process associated high metabolic turnover vulnerable cytotoxic excitotoxic factors. Oligodendrocyte pathology therefore evident in range disorders including multiple sclerosis, schizophrenia Alzheimer's disease. Deceased be replenished lost myelin regenerated during remyelination, prevent axonal degeneration restore function. Cell population studies have recently identified novel immunomodulatory functions oligodendrocytes, implications which, e.g., for diseases with primary pathology, not yet clear. Here, we review journey embryonic stage their role homeostasis fate We will also discuss most common models used study describe newly discovered

There is more to brain connections than the mere transfer of signals between regions. Behavior and cognition emerge through cortical area interaction. This requires integration local distant areas orchestrated by densely connected networks. Brain determine brain's functional organization. The imaging in living has provided an opportunity identify driving factors behind neurobiology cognition. Connectivity differences species among humans have furthered understanding evolution diverging cognitive profiles. pathologies amplify this variability disconnections and, consequently, disintegration functions. prediction long-term symptoms now preferentially based on disconnections. paradigm shift will reshape our maps challenge current models.

Significance Remyelination of the CNS is a critical process in restoring function and protecting nerve fibers from degeneration multiple sclerosis other demyelinating diseases. It currently thought that myelin can only be repaired by generation new oligodendrocytes progenitor cells remaining mature are unable to participate. Here we show, using unique large animal models, including nonhuman primate, partially injured participate repair. The capacity remyelinate disease remains unknown, yet it provides an additional cell source for recruitment

Abstract Depression is a common mental illness, affecting more than 300 million people worldwide. Decades of investigation have yielded symptomatic therapies for this disabling condition but not led to consensus about its pathogenesis. There are data support several different theories causation, including the monoamine hypothesis, hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis changes, inflammation and immune system alterations, abnormalities neurogenesis conducive environmental milieu. Research in these areas others has greatly advanced current understanding depression; however, there other, less widely known Oligodendrocyte lineage cells, oligodendrocyte progenitor cells mature oligodendrocytes, numerous important functions, which include forming myelin sheaths that enwrap central nervous axons, supporting axons metabolically, mediating certain forms neuroplasticity. These specialized glial been implicated psychiatric disorders such as depression. In review, we summarize recent findings shed light on how might participate pathogenesis depression, discuss new approaches targeting novel strategy treat
