Abstract Most cutaneous C fibers, including both peptidergic and nonpeptidergic subtypes, are presumed to be nociceptors respond noxious input in a graded manner. Orofacial inflammation leads to transcriptional alterations in trigeminal ganglion (TG) neurons. Neuropathic pain, caused by a lesion or disease of the somatosensory system, is common and distressing. In view high human economic burden, more effective treatment strategies were urgently needed. Acupuncture has been increasingly used as an adjuvant complementary therapy for neuropathic pain. Although therapeutic effects acupuncture have demonstrated in various high-quality randomized controlled trials, there significant heterogeneity underlying mechanisms.
