Recent years have seen an explosion of interest in naturalistic behaviour and machine learning tools for automatically tracking it. However, questions about what to measure, how measure it, relate neural activity cognitive processes remain unresolved. In this Perspective, we propose a general experimental computational framework - kinematic coding measuring information states is encoded structured patterns read out by others during social interactions. This enables the design new experiments generation testable hypotheses that link behaviour, cognition, at single-trial level. Researchers can employ identify single-subject, encoding readout computations address meaningful bodily motion transmitted communicated.

Developments in cognitive neuroscience have led to the emergence of hyperscanning, simultaneous measurement brain activity from multiple people. Hyperscanning is useful for investigating social cognition, including joint action, because its ability capture neural processes that occur within and between people as they coordinate actions toward a shared goal. Here, we provide practical guide researchers considering using hyperscanning study action seeking avoid frequently raised concerns skeptics. We focus specifically on Electroencephalography (EEG) which widely available optimally suited capturing fine-grained temporal dynamics coordination. The neural mechanisms underlying real-time social interaction remain poorly understood. While hyperscanning has emerged as a popular method to better understand inter-brain mechanisms, methods underdeveloped, and primarily focused on synchronization (IBS). We developed novel approach employing two-brain EEG microstates, investigate during symmetric asymmetric interactive tasks. Microstates are quasi-stable configurations of brain activity that have been proposed represent basic building blocks for mental processing. Expanding the microstate methodology dyads interacting participants enables us moments synchronous activity. Conventional microstates fitted individuals were not related different conditions. Abstract When people interact with each other, their brains synchronize. However, it remains unclear whether interbrain synchrony (IBS) is functionally relevant for social interaction or stems from exposure of individual to identical sensorimotor information. To disentangle these views, the current dual-EEG study investigated amplitude-based IBS in pianists jointly performing duets containing a silent pause followed by tempo change. First, we manipulated similarity anticipated change and measured during pause, hence, capturing alignment purely endogenous, temporal plans without sound movement. Notably, right posterior gamma was higher when partners planned similar tempi, predicted partners’ tempi matched after modulated only real, not surrogate pairs. Second, familiarity partner’s actions joint performance sound. Although information across conditions, were unfamiliar other’s part had attend more closely performance. These combined findings demonstrate that merely an epiphenomenon shared but can also hinge on cognitive processes crucial behavioral successful interaction.

Current approaches to analysing EEG hyperscanning data in the developmental literature typically consider interpersonal entrainment between interacting physiological systems as a time-invariant property. This approach obscures crucial information about how is established and maintained over time. Here, we describe methods, present computational algorithms, that will allow researchers address this gap literature. We focus on two different measuring entrainment, namely concurrent (e.g., power correlations, phase locking) sequential Granger causality) measures, can be applied three aspects of brain signal: amplitude, power, phase. guide reader through worked examples using simulated leverage these methods measure changes interbrain entrainment. Temporal coordination during infant-caregiver social interaction is thought to be crucial for supporting early language acquisition and cognitive development. Despite a growing prevalence of theories suggesting that increased inter-brain synchrony associates with many key aspects interactions such as mutual gaze, little known about how this arises Here, we investigated the role gaze onsets potential driver synchrony. We extracted dual EEG activity around naturally occurring in N = 55 dyads (mean age 12 months). differentiated between two types onset, depending on each partners' role. 'Sender' were defined at time when either adult or infant made shift towards their partner was already looking them (mutual) not (non-mutual). 'Receiver' Contrary our hypothesis found that, naturalistic interaction, both non-mutual associated changes sender, but receiver's brain increases above baseline. Further, mutual, compared inter Overall, results suggest effects are strongest intra-brain level, 'sender' 'receiver' gaze.

We know that infants' ability to coordinate attention with others toward the end of first year is fundamental language acquisition and social cognition. Yet, we understand little about neural cognitive mechanisms driving infant in shared interaction: do infants play a proactive role creating episodes joint attention? Recording electroencephalography (EEG) from 12-mo-old while they engaged table-top their caregiver, examined communicative behaviors activity preceding following infant- vs. adult-led attention. Infant-led appeared largely reactive: were not associated increased theta power, marker endogenously driven attention, did increase ostensive signals before initiation. Infants were, however, sensitive whether initiations responded to. When caregivers joined attentional focus, showed alpha suppression, pattern predictive processing.
