Abstract
Accurate
goal-directed
behavior

Abstract
Neuronal
responses
during
behavior

Abstract
Primary
sensory
cortex
has
long
been
believed
to
play
a
straightforward
role
in
the
initial
processing
of
information.
Yet,
superficial
layers
overall
are
sparsely
active,
even
during
stimulation;
additionally,
cortical
activity
is
influenced
by
other
modalities,
task
context,
reward,
and
behavioral
state.
Our
study
demonstrates
that
reinforcement
learning
dramatically
alters
representations
among
longitudinally
imaged
neurons
mouse
primary
somatosensory
cortex.
Learning
an
object
detection
recruits
previously
unresponsive
neurons,
enlarging
neuronal
population
sensitive
touch
choice.
Cortical
responses
decrease
upon
repeated
stimulus
presentation
outside
task.
Moreover,
training
improves
encoding
passage
time,
unexpected
deviations
trial
timing
elicit
stronger
than
touches
do.
In
conclusion,
exhibit
high
degree
learning-dependent
plasticity
strongly
modulated
non-sensory
but
behaviorally-relevant
features,

as
surprise.
