Enterovirus 71 (EV71), a typical representative of unenveloped RNA viruses, is the main pathogenic factor responsible for hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) in infants. This seriously threatens health lives humans worldwide, especially Asia–Pacific region. Numerous animal antimicrobial peptides have been found with protective functions against bacteria, fungi, parasites, other pathogens, but there are few studies on use scorpion-derived viruses. Here, we investigated antiviral activities scorpion venom peptide BmKn2 five derivatives, finding that its derivative BmKn2-T5 exhibit significant inhibitory effect EV71. Although both characteristics amphiphilic α-helices terms their secondary structure, displayed lower cellular cytotoxicity than BmKn2. was further to inhibit EV71 dose-dependent manner vitro. Moreover, time-of-drug-addition experiments showed mainly restricts EV71, not virion or replication, at early stages viral cycle. Interestingly, also suppress replication enveloped viruses DENV, ZIKV, HSV-1 cycle, which suggests they may share common infection step Together, results our study identified valuable properties vitro, making it potential new candidate therapeutic molecule.

The frequent and irrational use of antibiotics by humans has led to the escalating rise antimicrobial resistance (AMR) with a high rate morbidity-mortality worldwide, which poses challenge development effective treatments. A large number host defense peptides from different organisms have gained interest due their broad antibacterial spectrum, rapid action, low target resistance, implying that these natural sources might be new alternative drugs. As important effectors prey capture, against other animal attacks, competitor deterrence, scorpion venoms been developed as candidate for modern drug development. With progress bioanalytical throughput sequencing techniques, more scorpion-venom-derived peptides, including disulfide-bridged (DBPs) non-disulfide-bridged (NDBPs), recently identified having massive pharmacological activities in channelopathies, pathogen infections, cancer In this review, we summarize molecular diversity corresponding structural classification venom antibacterial, antifungal, and/or antiparasitic activity. We also aim improve understanding underlying mechanisms exert functions, finally highlight key aspects prospects therapeutic or pharmaceutical application.

Prevalent worldwide, the Androctonus scorpion genus contributes a vital role in envenoming. While diverse scorpionisms are observed because of several different species, their secretions to protect themselves have been identified as potent source antimicrobial peptide (AMP)‐like compounds. Distinctly, venom these species contains around 24 AMPs, with definite molecules studied for therapeutic potential antimicrobial, antifungal, antiproliferative and antiangiogenic agents. Our review focuses on native synthetic AMPs so far genus, identifying research gaps therapeutics guiding further investigations. Certain demonstrated remarkable compatibility be prescribed anticancer drug reduce cancer cell proliferation serve antibiotic alternative. Besides, analyses were performed explore characteristics affinities peptides membranes. Overall, study derived from provides valuable insights into applications medicine development.

Mosquitoes are responsible for the transmission of numerous pathogens, including Plasmodium parasites, arboviruses and filarial worms. They pose a significant risk to public health with over 200 million cases malaria per annum approximately four billion people at arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses). Mosquito populations geographically expanding into temperate regions their distribution is predicted continue increasing. symbionts, fungi, bacteria viruses, have desirable traits mosquito disease control spreading horizontally vertically through potentially colonising multiple important vector species. Paratransgenesis, genetic modification symbionts effectors target pathogen rather than vector, promising strategy prevent spread mosquito-borne diseases. A variety can be expressed but venom toxins excellent effector candidates because they specific, potent, and, stable. However, only explored in paratransgenesis date Scorpine mutated phospholipase A2. To enhance scope, effectiveness, durability paratransgenesis, an expanded arsenal required. This review discusses other potential future studies based on prior vitro vivo antiparasitic antiviral highlights need further research investment this area. In terms diseases, strategies been developed Plasmodium. We postulate apply principle using toxin effectors.

Venoms are complex mixtures produced by animals and consist of hundreds components including small molecules, peptides, enzymes selected for effectiveness efficacy over millions years evolution. With the development venomics, which combines genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics to study animal venoms their effects deeply, researchers have identified molecules that selectively effectively act against membrane targets, such as ion channels G protein-coupled receptors. Due remarkable physico-chemical properties, these represent a credible source new lead compounds. Today, not less than 11 approved venom-derived drugs on market. In this review, we aimed highlight advances in use venom peptides treatment diseases neurological disorders, cardiovascular diseases, or cancer.
