Abstract Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) is a management quality control system that encompasses the organizational process and conditions under which non-clinical health environmental studies are carried out. According to World Health Organization, GLP must contain five topics: resources, characterization, rules, results, control. This work aims address review according WHO standards of implementing Practices in zebrafish (Danio rerio) vivariums. Considering promotion one (animal, human, environmental) associated with an education plan, protocols, records fundamental guarantee safety integrity employees, animals, environment as well reliability results generated. In way, Brazil still needs improvements related well-being aquatic organisms (national laws, international agreements, corporate programs, others), especially concerning its use research technological development. this implementation GLPs provides valuable guidance for improving animal welfare worker safety, facilitating standardization research.

Good practice for the housing and care of laboratory zebrafish Danio rerio is an increasingly discussed topic, with focus on appropriate water quality parameters, stocking densities, feeding regimes, anaesthesia analgesia practices, methods humane killing, more. One area current attention around provision environmental enrichment. Enrichment accepted as essential requirement meeting behavioural needs improving welfare many animal species, but in general, minimal. Some those involved use suggest there a ‘lack evidence’ that enrichment has benefits this or cite belief do not ‘need’ Concerns are also sometimes raised practical challenges providing enrichments, they may impact science being undertaken. However, growing body evidence suggesting various forms preferred by over barren tank, enriched conditions can improve reducing stress anxiety. This review explores effects have behaviour, physiology welfare, considers to facilities more house.

Abstract Growing research effort has shown that physical enrichment (PE) can improve fish welfare and validity. However, the inclusion of PE does not always result in positive effects conflicting findings have highlighted many nuances involved. Effects are known to depend on species life stage tested, but may also vary with differences specific items used as between within studies. Reporting fine‐scale characteristics studies help reveal these factors. We conducted a survey PE‐focused published last 5 years examine current state methodological reporting. The results suggest some aspects adequately detailed. For example, amount dimensions objects were frequently omitted. Similarly, ecological relevance, or other justification, for was made explicit. Focusing ecologically relevant increasing level detail reported benefit future work we propose framework acronym DETAILS ( D imensions, E cological rationale, T iming enrichment, A mount, I nputs, L ighting S ocial environment). outline potential importance each elements this hope it aid reporting standardization across studies, ultimately aiding search more beneficial types development our understanding ability captive promote biologically behaviour.

Abstract With the rapid development of aquaculture and gradual decrease in fishery resources, aquatic animal welfare (AAW) has received increasing attention from protection organisations, government departments, biologists, fish culturists consumers. Although environmental enrichment (EE) can potentially benefit AAW, relevant results are sharply mixed, drivers for these discrepancies largely unclear. In this study, we conducted a series meta‐analyses to overcome knowledge gap. We firstly compiled full data set, consisting 1171 effect sizes 147 studies across 82 species then performed multilevel mixed‐effects model evaluate overall size conduct subsequent meta‐regression analyses. Overall, our showed that animals physically enriched environment had significantly improved AAW compared with their counterparts barren environments. For moderators, specific traits, taxa, stages, types colours strong positive EE effects on AAW. Subsequently, constructed set reran meta‐analysis, yielding substantially similar those obtained using set. Finally, multi‐model inference identify importance ranking potential moderators. Results type, taxon category best moderators direction magnitude These provide insights into possible important implications aquaculture, fisheries, conservation, research aquarium, providing evidence‐based guidance future theories practices.

The zebrafish is becoming an increasingly popular research animal around the world. Its welfare affected by array of environmental factors, such as food access and water quality. Holding density important aspect, not least due to its interaction with other housing conditions. Despite extensive use in research, little known how densities affect welfare. In this systematic review, we have performed a large literature search, compiled, evaluated all publications regarding holding density. We analyzed effects growth, reproduction, stress response, including behavior, quality, pathogenic outbreaks young adult fish. Our review shows that tested vary largely depending on focus, for example, body growth or behavior. fact, indicates future recommendations could depend which aspects are considered. Overall, there need more studies investigating interactive indicators, reproduction coupled response. necessity universal guidelines reporting information conditions larvae adults when publishing work.

ABSTRACT One of the most prevalent axes behavioral variation in both humans and animals is risk taking, where individuals that are more willing to take characterized as bold while those reserved regarded shy. Brain monoamines (i.e. serotonin, dopamine noradrenaline) have been found play a role variety behaviors related taking. Using zebrafish, we investigated whether there was relationship between monoamine function boldness behavior during exploration novel tank. We correlation serotonin metabolism (5-HIAA:5-HT ratio) initial exposure tank female animals. The DOPAC:DA ratio correlated with on third day male fish. There no noradrenaline. To probe differences serotonergic shy fish, administered selective reuptake inhibitor, escitalopram, assessed exploratory behavior. escitalopram had opposing effects thigmotaxis animals: drug caused fish spend time near center spent periphery. Taken together, our findings indicate has sex-specific contributions individual risk-taking
