The optimisation of green hydrogen production systems is challenging. Moreover, an accurate simulation the system required for effective optimisation. This study presents a novel method optimising utility-scale hybrid photovoltaic–wind using models. objective to minimise levelised cost (LCOH) genetic algorithms. Different types (such as islanded systems, grid-connected with or without possibility purchasing electricity from grid, and considering power curtailment), are evaluated optimised. Hydrogen is a crucial energy carrier for the Clean Energy Sustainable Development Goals and just transition to low/zero-carbon energy. As top CO2-emitting country, hydrogen (especially green hydrogen) production in South Africa has gained momentum due availability of resources, such as solar energy, land, wind platinum group metals (as catalysts electrolysers), water. However, demand insignificant, which implies that majority must be exported. Despite positive developments, there are unclear matters, dependence on national electricity grid cost transporting it Asian European markets.
