A key mission of many applied linguists is to understand how language-related processes work. This study explored how to promote incidental collocation learning from task-based reading. In this study, 101 Cantonese speakers read three English texts that contained 12 target collocations. Playing a role as an editor of magazine, participants were asked determine if the acceptable be published in next issue. While half (– Guidance, n = 50) simply accept or reject after reading, other (+ 51) received task guidance list specific reviewing criteria. Participants’ eye-movements recorded during task, and 10 each condition produce stimulated recalls while viewing their eye-movements. The rest participants’ ( 81) knowledge about collocations was measured with form recall recognition tests immediately two weeks task. results revealed led greater fixation durations counts on collocations, well improved performances immediate posttest. further indicated encouraged more goal-oriented findings underscore importance careful design

Abstract This study examined if gaze‐contingent textual enhancement could be used as an interactive focus‐on‐form device to promote learning of second language (L2) collocations from computer‐mediated reading tasks. Seventy‐five Chinese ESL users read three English texts that contained twelve target collocations, presented under one conditions: no highlighting, proactive highlighting (target highlighted in advance), and when looked at). Participants' eye movements were captured during the task, collocation form recall recognition tests administered immediately after 2 weeks later. Additionally, five participants each group took part a stimulated session, eliciting their thoughts while reading. The results indicated both techniques increased total fixation duration count on improved scores posttests. Gaze‐contingent demonstrated more durable impact test compared highlighting. comments also revealed tended attentive processing collocations. These findings suggest is useful technique task‐based contexts, with yielding potential benefits terms L2 learning.

In contextual vocabulary acquisition, second language learners address both morphological and cues to infer the meanings of novel words. The study investigated cognitive strategies their eye movement correlates in inferencing task. A sample 30 healthy participants with normal or corrected vision read an Intermediate-level text English, aiming define meaning 10 low-frequency words embedded text. Based on unstructured structured post-hoc reports, we attributed process either word-level processing, context-level discourse-level processing strategy. Eye movements were recorded target word clause areas interest. Inferencing success was associated increased first fixation duration for word- strategy, dwell time Our findings emphasize role

Multilingual speakers’ linguistic practices are typically investigated via self-report measures, often relying on subjective memory recall. This article examines the potential of an interdisciplinary methodology which would allow us to examine experiences multilingual speakers as they played out in real time and space through a combination GPS monitoring, use Electronically Activated Recorder (EAR) map-based ethnographic interviews. EAR offer promising opportunities investigate spatial dynamics well acquiring new language its subsequent use. Despite frequent applications adjacent fields such human geography, urban analytics, sociology psychology, these methods applied linguistics is still relatively scarce. In this we benefits limitations using automated processes for observing behaviour those provided by technologies. It addresses timely ethical questions age AI development solutions devise privacy-preserving tools when looks at how technologies can be optimised combined with qualitative approaches, providing rich accounts stories behind behaviours.
