Renewable energy sources have emerged globally as a key lever to ensure security and promote climate mitigation. Cities need exploit this transition, but how they are building their strategies actions is undetermined. A new dataset, collected through the European 100 Climate-Neutral Smart Mission, offers unique insights on 362 cities which expressed ambition reach neutrality by 2030. Insights include level of preparedness, ambition, capacity risks envisaged in pursuit zero-emission greener futures. This study focuses particular role renewable across high greenhouse gas emitting sectors (e.g. buildings, mobility, waste industry). It analyses i) status quo for generation, consumption, policymaking, ii) measures enhance upscale deployment near future, iii) policies relevant instruments will evolve curb emissions accelerate transition. The that emerge from analysis discussed relation existing evidence, inform future research strands forms assistance cities. Overall, deliver large projects, efforts be intensified, barriers lifted multi-governance approaches must operationalised.

The present study develops a review of heating and cooling (H&C) technologies used to produce space H&C services in eleven European member states. On the one hand, it revises (a) technical parameters, e.g. energy efficiency, various technologies. other reflects status-quo (b) economic costs these systems, exhibits (c) short environmental impact assessment. Costs are differentiated between investment operational costs. technology portfolio is subdivided into (i) end-use technologies, (ii) district (DH) (iii) Based on data analysis, different systems compared among another terms capital cost, lifetime age stock. Whilst heat pump (HP) excel average natural gas boilers most efficient option fossil fuel fired boilers. Furthermore, cleanest fuels. assessment importance renewable for sustainable transition. HP electric heaters grid-dependent CO2 footprint depends carbon specific country's electricity supply. Regarding following concluded: average, HPs solar thermal collectors around 1000 k€/MW, while biomass cost slightly more. Both DH level, cost-efficient options. District low-cost options small granular air-conditioners. (which can provide attendances) more cost-effective decentralised scale, meanwhile combined power (CHP) plants competitive large plant level. Current developments challenges within residential sector identified future research trends summarised. Overall, outcome simple, but unified Europe perspective pathways this sector.

District heating (DH) networks are a key component of low-carbon urban in the future, as greenhouse gas emissions and sustainability concerns drive sector to transform itself. DH is not new technology, but it has been constantly evolving. The latest generation facilitates distribution low-temperature renewable heat sources. In recent years, most studies have focused on managing peak demand, improving technologies, load prediction. However, there risk misinterpretation, generations DH, which operate at significantly lower temperatures than conventional being developed simultaneously. This review aims analyze different definitions fifth-generation district cooling (5GDHC) introduce straightforward concept this technology. It also describes potential strengths, weaknesses, challenges integrating 5GDHC into existing systems, well practical recommendations. Finally, analyzes crucial components notable characteristics provide clear picture its evolution uniqueness.
