To mitigate climate change while catering to the needs of a growing population, cities need find smarter ways manage their resources, reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Since waste management and circular economy will be instrumental in this endeavour, current level circularity cities, environmental impact related activities sharable best practices explored. This paper examines roadmap zero emissions 362 that expressed interest Horizon Europe 100 Climate-Neutral Smart Cities Mission. Based on an unprecedented suite city inputs, study answers set research questions so far unaddressed due lack suitable dataset. The analysis focusses a) actions undertaken by achieving reducing/optimising streams, b) envisioned supporting neutrality 2030, c) urban sectors metabolic flows for which has particularly high potential change. Best are captured create informative aimed at policy-makers encouraging peer-to-peer learning. Finally, barriers incrementing approaches emerge from cities' self-assessments compared those identified existing scientific literature provide input more comprehensive conceptual framework. Overall, distils how imaginaries translated into local governance policy-making focussing large group cities. is key truly understand why some initiatives fail others succeed can inform all relevant stakeholders next steps take.

Mitigating urban overheating is vital to create livable futures. Research on heat mitigation plentiful, while knowledge about the actual measures local governments are implementing limited. This study examines 7,500+ actions by 2,500+ cities under two flagship programs of European Commission. The analysis reveals that cities' strategies pivot around green- and water-based technologies (66% actions) mildly leveraging permeable reflective surfaces (35%) rarely solar shading wind control (8%) or stimuli-responsive/smart systems (2%). Hundreds (1) indicate extreme as a hazard growing intensity and/or frequency, (2) located in hot-summer climatic zones, (3) will experience increasingly frequent heatwaves, (4) host numerous population not reporting any precaution. Moreover, show limited familiarity with combinatorial approaches little attention specific vulnerable groups. Prevention, awareness, social justice should receive more attention.

As Smart Cities development grows, deploying advanced technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Cyber–Physical Systems, and particularly, Artificial Intelligence (AI), becomes imperative for efficiently managing energy resources. These technologies serve to coalesce elements life cycle. By integrating smart infrastructures, including renewable energy, electric vehicles, grids, AI emerges a keystone, improving various urban processes. Using PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items Systematic Reviews Meta-Analyses) Scopus database, this study meticulously reviews existing literature, focusing on in four principal domains: generation, transmission, distribution, consumption. Additionally, paper shows technological gaps when is implemented Cities. A total 122 peer-reviewed articles are analyzed, findings indicate that have led remarkable advancements each domain. For example, algorithms been employed generation optimize resource allocation predictive maintenance, especially energy. The role anomaly detection grid stabilization significant transmission distribution. Therefore, review outlines trends, high-impact articles, emerging keyword clusters, offering comprehensive analytical lens through which multifaceted applications City sectors can be evaluated. objective provide an extensive framework techniques currently deployed elucidates their connected implications sustainable This synthesis aimed at policymakers, planners, researchers interested leveraging transformative potential advance sustainability efficiency initiatives sector.

While the effects of climate change are already being felt in many parts world, societies compelled to drastically rethink way they produce and manage energy, reduce greenhouse-gases emissions associated sector. Urban areas a critical piece puzzle achieve energy transition reach ambitious targets set out at global European scales. Positive districts (PEDs), new concept introduced 2018 by Strategic Energy Technology Plan, constitute bottom-up response this massive problematic an opportunity accelerate towards low-carbon models cities. However, their deployment is currently facing diverse complex challenges, mainly arising from novelty lack practical experience. In that context, contribution present review literature twofold. First, it seeks provide broad perspective advances research on PEDs with special focus applied studies experiences. Then, aims identify substantial challenges slowing down effective operationalization, study what extent researchers practitioners approaching them. To end, 135 papers selected, categorized, analysed according topics, locations, climates, districts, studied solutions social concerns. As result, paper gives overview main trends necessities practice draws recommendations how adequately address identified challenges.
