Healthy plankton communities are the foundation of many freshwater food webs. Their biodiversity is often used to directly reflect health rivers. Globally, river ecosystem restoration a critical issue and ecosystems, especially in cities, degraded because intensive human activities. This true for Jinan, China’s first pilot city Water Ecological Civilisation Project. The outcomes aquatic will affect success or failure construction ecological civilisations across entire country; therefore, there an urgent need research on assessment Jinan based biodiversity. As such, this study gathered data distribution (phytoplankton zooplankton) by collecting three sets samples from 59 monitoring stations spring, summer autumn 2015. In all, 104 species phytoplankton 56 zooplankton were identified. Diatoms, Chlorophyta, Cyanophyta accounted 50, 31 15% respectively phytoplankton, rotifers, Protozoa cladocerans 39, 17% zooplankton. We constructed model Shannon–Wiener diversity index analysis temporal spatial distribution. According overall diagram, spatially status was significantly better north south than centre; temporally, spring water autumn. These conclusions provide theoretical basis direction ecosystems methods can serve as reference evaluation developing countries.

ABSTRACT Anthropogenic structures, such as dams, delay, injure and kill during downstream migrating silver‐phase Anguillid eels. To enhance spawner escapement from rivers, efforts are being made to develop devices that guide eels towards safe passage routes. We tested the ability of a strobing light array deflect European silver ( Anguilla anguilla ) by comparing distribution eel catches in series nets when lights were on (treatment periods) off (control periods). Deflection efficiency was 80.6% (95% CL = 74.3%–85.3%), estimated proportion total biomass captured located immediately control treatment periods. Eels caught periods (Mean ± S.E.; 452 11 mm) significantly smaller than those (538 8 mm), which suggested less capable avoiding array. Future research should determine specifications for operation strobe arrays, including effects intensity rate, angle deployment, environmental factors deflection efficiency.

In European countries, hydromorphological (HyMo) pressures are the second most commonly occurring types of on aquatic ecosystems (after eutrophication). HyMo (i.e., man-made alterations to hydrology and morphometry ecosystems) impact functioning lakes rivers in multiple ways. Initially, they have profound effects littoral communities, such as macrophytes, benthic invertebrates, fish. Ultimately, result pervasive alteration whole-lake ecosystems. Extensive efforts been devoted development ecological assessment methods management measures focusing mainly eutrophication, whereas less understood not properly addressed. We attempted clarify conceptual background, highlight achievements method development, including pressure–response relationships metrics used assessment, underscore issues requiring urgent attention. concluded that currently biological do reliably address alterations. The need develop specifically responding measure necessary variables routine monitoring programs is urgent. This review paper also serves an introductory article a small special series papers impacts water level fluctuations. Papers this include updated literature fluctuations lake macroinvertebrates, indicators natural artificial lakes, addressing between fluctuation spatial temporal patterns cladoceran communities dammed lake.

Freshwater ecosystems are among the systems most threatened and impacted by anthropogenic activities, but there is still a lack of knowledge on how this multi-pressure environment impacts aquatic communities in situ. In Europe, nutrient enrichment temperature increase due to global change were identified as two main pressures lakes. Therefore, we investigated interaction these community structure extreme components lake food webs: phytoplankton fish. We modelled relationship between (abundance, composition, size) environmental conditions, including pressures. Different patterns response highlighted. Four metrics responded only one pressure metric additive effect Two fish (average body-size biomass ratio perch roach) eutrophication, revealing that was dependent magnitude second pressure. From management point view, it appears necessary consider type strength interactions when assessing sensitivity communities, otherwise their vulnerability (especially change) could be poorly estimated.

Eutrophication is one of the major threats to quality water in high mountain lakes. The inflow elements having biological origin may significantly aggravate ecological status those ecosystems. Fish are an important component of aquatic ecosystems, thus representative and reliable assessments their population variables essential for a variety ecological applications, management conservation. Determining Density per actual Spatial Unit (volume or area, FDSU) as measure absolute fish quantity is particular interest. Gillnets undoubtedly one the most common methods assessing populations in large lentic waters. However, direct calculating FDSU from gillnet catches impossible because passive nature this method, to date there no model catches. This weakness largely limits use data applications requiring estimates. The aim study was calibrate using obtained by active (beach seine nets hydroacoustics) develop tool To achieve goal, we compared biomass estimated methods, both which cover similar spatiotemporal niches. comparison performed statistical approach based on recognition non-negligible random measurement error explanatory (active methods) response (gillnets) variables. We found strong positive linear relationship between biomasses sampled with gillnets methods. slope fitted when comparing two method used allowed inclusion estimates refining credible intervals relationship. effect effort accuracy simulated show how increased narrows interval. Finally, previously published relationships revealed but explainable discrepancy our previous models. Our showed that conversion spatial unit possible. effective sampling area square meter determined be 8 m2 waterbody surface European standard 12 mesh-sizes used, 5 four larger meshes added gillnets. further stressed impact reducing estimation variability shows may dependent community.
