Bivalves are a good source of nutrients but also potential environmental contaminants, which could pose risk for consumers. The aims this study were: the determination 16 elements by ICP-MS in 48 samples five bivalve species purchased from market Korea; identification useful classification using multivariate analyses; and benefit-risk evaluation associated to consumption these bivalves. highest difference among content between was found Cd, Mn, Ni, Zn, Fe. Partial last squares discriminant analysis revealed with VIP score >1 were considered as most relevant explaining certain species. As, Co, Ni taxonomical markers V. philippinarum; Mg, Na A. irradians; Fe M. yessoensis. These serve dietary sources essential elements. Cd exposure Manila clams is not representing health Korean population; however, through Yesso scallops, 5.3% population has risk. Removal digestive gland before eating will drastically reduce amount ingested.

We report a monthly distribution of Zn, Cd, Pb, Cu, Ni and Co, biologically relevant trace metals (TMs), within one year, in the productive surface layer at two stations with different trophic characters northern Adriatic (NA). The TM data was accompanied by multivariable dataset, including dissolved organic carbon (DOC), surface-active substances (SAS), nitrogen-containing polymeric material (N-POM), nutrients, pH, O2, chlorophyll (Chl a), seawater temperature, Po River discharge rate. At eu- to mesotrophic station 108, concentrations TMs were 5–116 nM for 0.04–0.18 0.05–0.63 3–17 4–11 Ni, 0.2–1.2 while oligotrophic 107, they 6–224 0.03–0.16 0.05–1.25 4–19 0.1–0.7 Co. characterization matter (OM) conjunction analysis correlations indicated that OM–TMs interactions differed between stations; namely, freshly produced OM detected 108 probably involved complexation whereas such processes not present. Accumulation DOC observed during summer months both stations. Our results present significant contribution biogeochemical studies NA focusing on complexity TM–OM interactions, which is prerequisite interpretation their responses local global changes.

Copper (Cu) is a ubiquitous trace element in the aquatic environment, and usually found at low levels. environmental concentrations can be altered as result anthropogenic activities. Shellfish are useful bioindicators to ensure adequate monitoring. Thus, aim of present study was follows: (a) determine LC50 copper(I) chloride grooved carpet shell (Ruditapes decussatus) collected Santa Gilla lagoon (Sardinia, Italy), (b) analyze antioxidant biomarkers digestive gland gills same specimens exposed different above-mentioned metal (0.045, 0.45, 0.90 mg/L) for 96 h. A withdrawal period h considered treated clam, carrying out biochemical analyses, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase (Se-GPx), S-transferases (GSTs), total (GSH+2GSSG) two tissues. Different time dose responses were recorded glands gills. Oxidative stress highlighted ability Cu induce oxidative R. decussatus. Clam, following h, has not been able achieve control levels all markers decussatus suitable model assess ecotoxicity copper ecosystems. These findings may advance knowledge on role effects shell. The response perform accurate biomarker-based monitoring programs using this bivalve species.

In animals, doubly uniparental inheritance (DUI) is a major exception to the common strict maternal of mitochondria. To date, DUI has only been found in many bivalve species, but its distribution still unclear. Given great species richness class, much effort needed further investigate occurrence unsampled species. A compelling evidence generally presence sex-linked heteroplasmy, where two divergent mitochondrial lineages are found: One isolated from male germline, and other one female germline and, normally, soma both sexes. present study, we investigated heteroplasmy razor clam Solen marginatus Pulteney, 1799 lagoon cockle Cerastoderma glaucum (Bruguière, 1789) using markers (cox1 rrnL). We S. marginatus, with divergence up 21% for rrnL gene, not C. glaucum. Moreover, our phylogenetic reconstruction includes all available data heterodont suggests multiple origins this subclass, as well genus Solen.

The levels of essential (Cu, Cr, Co, Mn, Se, Zn) and non-essential (As, Be, Bi, Cd, Cs, Ga, Ni, Pb, Sr, Tl, U, V) trace elements were studied in razor clams (Solen marginatus) collected from the Tyrrhenian coast Southern Italy at five selected sites along Domitio littoral Campania region. main objectives this study to assess contamination status these bivalve mollusks evaluate risks environment consumers due metal contamination. concentrations 18 determined after microwave-assisted mineralization by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Concentrations toxic Pb Cd below maximum established Commission Regulation (EC) 1881/2006, while higher average arsenic found each studied. Regarding other elements, followed order: Zn > Sr Mn Cu Se Cr V Ni Co Ga Cs Be U Bi Tl. No significant differences among with regard any analyzed, element did not reflect sediment results demonstrated substantial food safety area respect heavy metals but revealed a potential health risk all areas sampled.
