Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Compounds (PPCPs) are contaminants present in wastewater the receiving surface waters, which have no regulations can bring on environmental risks. In this study, we evaluated presence of six PPCPs Oro River Sub-basin (Colombia) risk associated with them. We verified that monitored rivers show Ibuprofen, Cephalexin Carbamazepine; first ones (Ibuprofen cephalexin) were those presented higher concentrations since they widely prescribed Colombia. Pharmaceutical compound downstream treatment plants from Floridablanca than other monitoring sites being a significant point source contamination. The increase and indiscriminate use of personal care products, food fertilizers, pesticides, health among others, have resulted/are resulting in extensive environmental contamination. Most these products contain traces widespread chemicals, usually known as emerging pollutants (EPs) or concern (PEC). Latin American (LA) region comprises 20 countries with different social cultural aspects, 81 % the population living urban areas. LA has some on top list users/consumers EPs, from pesticides fertilizers to products. However, there is a gap information related distribution EPs environment this region, very few existing review texts exploring issue. Therefore, present paper advances approach. An exhaustive literature review, selection 176 documents, provided unique up-to-date presence/distribution 17 classes legacy matrices (soil, sediment, water, air). study shows that wide recorded levels continental are potential risks human health, mainly through drinking water ingestion. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons deep public since they show carcinogenic properties. Several pollutants, like endocrine disruptors, caused harmful effects humans environment. The procedures for analyzing pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are typically tedious expensive thus, it is necessary to synthesize all available information from previously conducted research. An extensive collection of PPCP data the published literature was compiled determine occurrence, pathways, effectiveness current treatment technologies removal PPCPs in water wastewater. Approximately 90% papers originated Asia, Europe, North American regions. incomplete different wastewater processes widely reported, thus resulting occurrence compounds various environmental compartments.
