Plastics pollution poses a new threat to marine ecosystems. Mangrove locating at estuary worldwide is probably the most heavily polluted area trapping various plastics transported from terrestrial and nearby aquaculture. Expanded polystyrene (EPS) one of common plastic debris therein even in garbage. Here we showed bacterial diversity polystyrene-degrading microbial community EPS waste sites subtropical mangrove area. After enrichment with EPS, degradation consortia were obtained. They shared similar structure dominated by bacteria Sphingomonadaceae, Rhodanobacteraceae, Rhizobiaceae, Dermacoccaceae, Rhodocyclaceae, Hyphomicrobiaceae, Methyloligellaceae. Diverse standing for first member genera Novosphingobium, Gordonia, Stappia, Mesobacillus, Alcanivorax, Flexivirga, Cytobacillus, Thioclava, Thalassospira PS capability as pure culture. Further, biodegradation Gordonia sp. Novosphingobium was quantified weight loss, addition obvious morphological structural changes films observed SEM, ATR-FTIR, contact angle analysis. The formation oxygen-containing functional groups implied pathway oxidation. Although rates ranged 2.7% 7.7% after month lab possibly lower situ, their role removal unneglectable.

Coastal lagoons are transitional environments between continental and marine aquatic systems. Globally, coastal of great ecological socioeconomic importance as providers valuable ecosystem services. However, these fragile subject to several human pressures, including pollution by microplastics (MPs). The aim this review was identify summarize advances in MP research across the world. We consider peer−reviewed publications on topic published English Spanish 2000 April 21, 2022, available Scopus Google Scholar. found 57 with data abundances their characteristics 50 from around world, 58% which have some environmental protection status. number type has increased significantly since 2019. Methodological differences amongst studies MPs were nevertheless a limiting factor for wide−ranging comparisons. Most (77%) conducted single compartments, integration limited, hampering current understanding dynamics such lagoons. more abundant highly populated shores watersheds, support intensive activities. On contrary, natural protected areas had lower MPs, mostly sediments organisms. Fiber/filament fragment shapes, polyethylene, polyester, polypropylene polymers predominant. accumulated certain lagoons, or been exported sea, depending influence seasonal weather, hydrodynamics, anthropogenic typology MPs. It is advised that future should focus methodological aspects, assessment/monitoring itself, impacts, prevention measures part sound management.

Microplastics are readily accumulated in coastal sediments, where active sulfur (S) cycling takes place. However, the effects of microplastics on S sediments and their underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, transformation patterns different species mangrove amended with associated microbial communities were investigated using stable isotopic analysis metagenomic sequencing. Biodegradable poly(lactic acid) (PLA) treatment increased sulfate (SO42–) reduction to yield more acid-volatile elementary S, which subsequently transformed chromium-reducible (CRS). The isotope fractionation between SO42– CRS PLA by 9.1‰ from days 0 20, was greater than 6.8‰ control. contrast, recalcitrant petroleum-based poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) polyvinyl chloride (PVC) had less impact reduction, resulting 7.6 7.7‰ respectively. pronounced relative abundance Desulfovibrio-related sulfate-reducing bacteria, contributed a large proportion genes responsible for dissimilatory reduction. Overall, these findings provide insights into potential impacts exposure biogeochemical cycle sediments.
