Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) is effective energy-saving for wastewater treatment. As an inevitable intermediate product in the SND process, nitrite affects efficiency of ammonia oxidation composition nitrifiers. To investigate impact on efficiency, two reactors performing were respectively operated without (R1 as control) with 20 mg N/L addition (R2 experimental). The total nitrogen removal was 74.5% R1 while 99.0% R2. With (i.e., N/L), rate R2 increased to 4.5 times that R1. ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) bacteria (AOB) contributed respective around 46.9% 41.8% based results experiments specific inhibitors. number AOA AOB monooxygenase gene (amoA) copies by 280 30 due addition, according qPCR results. high-throughput sequencing illustrated increase dominant species from 0.40% 1.59% phylogenetic tree analysis revealed a close link Nitrosospira multiformis.
