Understanding the geochemistry and contamination of rivers affected by rupture tailings dams is paramount to emergency water resources management. This needs long-term monitoring tailings, sediments along river, understanding how interact physically geochemically with natural flowing water. An effort this kind uncommon because its cost opportunity. The purpose study was help filling gap using B1 dam (Brumadinho, Minas Gerais, Brazil, 25 January 2019) as example. To accomplish objective, 31 parameters sediment were monitored weekly for three years after event, spanning impacted non-impacted sectors Paraopeba River, including a reservoir that attenuating propagation downstream. Using hierarchical clustering analysis, assembled into groups. Associations between within groups pointed processes drivers controlling concentrations Fe, Mn, Al, As, Pb P in results suggested reductive dissolution Pb- Mn-bearing minerals key process. Abstract Tragic incidents involving mine tailings spills have impacted many aquatic ecosystems around the world. The massive dam collapse of Fundão, which occurred in Brazil 2015, affected several ecosystems, including shallow and deep lakes lower Doce River basin. Until now, effects on functional diversity zooplankton remain poorly understood. We investigated (functional groups, richness [FRic] evenness [FEve]) lakes, exploring influence environmental variables metals. In addition, trends redundancy vulnerability were also assessed to understand patterns resilience mining‐impacted ecosystems. Surveys performed monthly three by failure, from October 2018 September 2019. community was dominated smaller filter‐feeders omnivorous species, associated with cyanobacteria density chlorophyll‐ a . Tropical mining should receive particular attention conservation plans, as consequence their high level pollutant retention comparison we highlight importance using approach better ecosystem resulting impacts environments.

Abstract This review elucidated the recent advances in integrating microalgal communities monitoring metal pollution aquatic ecosystems of sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). It also highlighted potential incorporating microalgae as bioindicators emerging technologies, identified research gaps, and suggested directions for further biomonitoring pollution. Reputable online scholarly databases were used to identify articles published between January 2000 June 2023 synthesis. Results indicated that integrated either individually or combined with other bioindicators, mainly macroinvertebrates, macrophytes, fish, alongside physicochemical monitoring. There was a significantly low level integration (< 1%) SSA compared geographical regions. Microalgal employed assess compliance (76%), diagnosis (38%), early-warning systems (38%) ecological health status. About 14% studies eDNA, while such remote sensing, artificial intelligence, biosensors, are yet be incorporated. Nevertheless, there is aforementioned technologies SSA. Future region should consider standardisation synchronisation integrative embrace “Citizen Science” concept at national regional scales. Graphical abstract
