This study examines seasonal and regional trends in chlorophyll-a concentrations the dynamics of nitrogen (N) phosphorus (P) 32 fishponds (resulting 150 pond-year cases) employed for fish production. Fishponds have a poor ecological state, requiring further insights pond management. To gain those insights, monthly data on environment were collected over growing seasons from April to September (up 14 years) across lowland highland regions Czechia. We used ratio dissolved inorganic total (DIN:TP) investigate patterns N P limitations. region (below 199 m above sea level, a.s.l.) predominantly N-limited (80%), while ponds midland (200–449 exhibited limitation at beginning season (April–May) by end (August–September; 90% fishponds). Highland (above 450 showed frequent limitations, especially during season. Chlorophyll-a varied both scales, with overall phytoplankton biomass peak 31 ha surface area. remained stable regardless DIN:TP but increased lower its end. The lowest highest decreased altitude. Seasonal variations nutrient limitations occur fishponds. Our suggests that targeted input enhanced monitoring can significantly improve fishpond management practices ecosystem stability.

Worldwide, water quality managers target a clear, macrophyte-dominated state over turbid, phytoplankton-dominated in shallow lakes. The competition mechanisms underlying these ecological states were explored the 1990s, but concept of critical turbidity seems neglected contemporary models. In particular, simple mechanistic model alternative stable lakes accounting for resource and is lacking. To this end, we combined Scheffer's theory on with insights from nutrient light founded by Tilman, Huisman Weissing. This resulted novel graphical mathematical model, GPLake-M, that relatively mechanistically understandable yet captures essential leading to process-based PCLake was used parameterize parameters test GPLake-M using pattern-oriented strategy. GPLake-M's application range position spectrum are discussed. We believe our results support fundamental understanding regime shifts provide starting point further management-focused explorations development. Furthermore, relation between light-limited submerged macrophytes nutrient-limited phytoplankton might new focus empirical aquatic research monitoring programs.

Defining nutrient thresholds that protect and support the ecological integrity of aquatic ecosystems is a fundamental step in maintaining their natural biodiversity preserving resilience. With increasing catchment pressures climate change, it more important than ever to develop clear methods establish for status classification management waters. Abstract Because of the first observations in 1900s oligotrophic and eutrophic states lakes, researchers have been interested process that makes lakes become turbid because high phytoplankton biomass. Definitions eutrophication multiplied diversified since mid‐20th century, more than for any other ecological process. Reasons number definitions might be former ones did not sufficiently describe their causes and/or consequences. Global change is bringing into spotlight ever, highlighting need to find consensus on a common definition, or at least explain clarify why there are different meanings term eutrophication. Ecological thresholds are a useful indicator for implementing ecological management. Many studies determine the nutrient loads in lakes based on maximum allowable concentration of chlorophyll (Chla), although this neglects overall performance ecosystem. A PCLake model Baiyangdian (BYD) Lake northern China was constructed with six network analysis (ENA) indicators that characterized ecosystem function, system maturity, and food web structure to quantify status BYD To my knowledge, is first study level responses phosphorus load interference. Different scenarios were designed simulate Lake. The simulated results employed calculate ENA indicators. determined through driving response relationship between gradient show non-linear transition under gradient. Abstract Although understanding nutrient limitation of primary productivity in lakes is among the oldest research priorities limnology, there have been few broad‐scale studies characteristics phosphorus (P)‐, nitrogen (N)‐, and co‐limited their environmental context. By analyzing 3342 US with concurrent P, N, chlorophyll a (Chl ) samples, we showed that are predominantly (43%) or P‐limited (41%). Majorities were Northeast, Upper Midwest, Southeast, co‐limitation was most prevalent interior western United States. N‐limitation (16%) more than P‐limitation Great Basin Central Plains. Nutrient related to lake, watershed, regional variables, including Chl concentration, watershed soil, wet nitrate deposition. N P concentrations interactively affected nutrient–chlorophyll relationships, which differed by limitation. Our study demonstrates value considering context relationships.
