Abstract The Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments (SPRUCE) experiment has operated five whole‐ecosystem warming manipulations (+0, +2.25, +4.5, +6.75, +9°C) with paired ambient elevated CO 2 atmospheres (eCO , +500 ppm) for 8 full calendar years (since August 2015). We tracked shrub‐layer vegetation responses to the treatments using annual destructive plot sampling. Tree ( Picea Larix ) were assessed annually nondestructive dimensional analyses allometric conversions. Shrub community changes key ericaceous shrubs Rhododendron, Chamaedaphne, Kalmia ), two Vaccinium species V. angustifolium, oxycoccos graminoid (mostly Eriophorum one common forb Maianthemum trifolium plus minor understory species. aboveground net primary production (ANPP) vascular plant in gC m −2 y −1 overall stand contribution dry mass. observed a linear increase biomass accumulation over time due primarily an shrub abundance. Cumulative increases across showed positive eCO after years. Community composition also changed warming, woody density, reduction or loss of forbs. tree minimal initial early treatments, but since 2020, shown significant ANPP individual growth warming. main driver change was temperature, less pronounced effects evident. These results indicate from both layers peatland vegetation.

Abstract. Quantifying the effects of external climatic and anthropogenic stressors on aquatic ecosystems is an important task for scientific purposes management progress in field water resources. In this study, we propose innovative use biotic communities as real-time indicators, which offers a promising solution to directly quantify impact these ecosystem health. The rapid expansion of remote sensing provides recent and developed advances in monitoring wetlands. Integrating cloud computing with these techniques has been identified as an effective tool, especially for dealing heterogeneous datasets. In this study, we conducted a systematic literature review (SLR) to determine the current state-of-the-art knowledge integrating results SLR revealed that platform-as-a-service was only service model implemented practice wetland monitoring. Remote applications included prediction, time series analysis, mapping, classification, change detection. Only 51% reviewed literature, focused on regional scale, used satellite data. Additionally, found technologies are not integrated enough benefit from their potential Despite gaps, analysis economic benefits could be achieved by implementing To address gaps pave way further research, propose Internet Things (IoT) monitor wetlands effectively.

Abstract Climate warming and projected increase in summer droughts puts northern peatlands under pressure by subjecting them to a combination of gradual drying extreme weather events. The combined effect those on peatland functions is poorly known. Here, we studied the impact long‐term water level drawdown (WLD) contrasting conditions leaf phenology biomass production ground vegetation boreal peatlands. Data were collected during two growing seasons from WLD experiment including rich poor fen an ombrotrophic bog. Results showed that had strong both area development production, these responses differed between types. In bog, increased plant growth, while fen, reduced growth vegetation. Plant groups their response, as graminoids, shrubs tree seedlings benefited it. addition, adjusted lower WTs, was more responsive short‐term climatic variations. warmer resulted greater maximum earlier peaking index, vascular plants Sphagnum mosses at sites. particular, graminoids benefitted conditions. change towards sites general related observed transition functional type composition arboreal

Peatlands are major natural carbon pool in terrestrial ecosystems globally and essential to a variety of fields, including global ecology, hydrology, ecosystem services. Under the context climate change, management conservation peatlands has become topic international concern. Nevertheless, few studies have yet systematized overall dynamics existing peatland research. In this study, based on an approach integrating bibliometrics literature review, we systematically analyzed research from perspective. Alongside traditional bibliometric analyses (e.g., number publications, impact, hot areas), recent top keywords were found, ‘oil palm’, ‘tropical peatland’, ‘permafrost’, so on. Furthermore, six topics identified: (1) development impacts degradations, (2) history factors formation, (3) chemical element contaminants peatlands, (4) tropical (5) peat adsorption its humic acids, (6) influence ecosystem. addition, review found that adverse consequences degradation change merit greater attention, peatland-mapping techniques suitable for all regions lacking, unified assessment stocks urgently needs be established, spanning countries, reliable system assessing peatland-ecosystem services implemented expeditiously. argued enhanced integration will bridge knowledge gaps facilitate systematic synthesis as complex systems, which is imperative need.

Peatlands play a pivotal role in global carbon cycling and the conservation of biodiversity even though they cover small fraction Earth's terrestrial surface. These ecosystems are, however, increasingly vulnerable due to climate change impacts anthropogenic activities, leading significant degradation many areas. This review compiles analyses various studies that employ remote sensing for comprehensive peatland mapping monitoring. Remote offers detailed insights into critical features, including classification vegetation, assessment water table dynamics, vegetation condition diversity estimation stocks. Furthermore, delineates utility monitoring recovery processes restored peatlands, highlighting scarcity long-term studies. It also emphasizes potential integrating hyperspectral, multispectral SAR data as well cross-scale analyses. Concluding with future directions, underscores necessity enhanced upscaling techniques, integration multi-sensor application modelling enrich our understanding management ecosystems.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is the most active component in soil environment. Understanding chemical diversity of DOM and interaction physicochemical properties are key to managing peatland under succession. In this study, we aimed understand effects succession on DOM. We collected samples (topsoil: 0–10 cm, subsoil: 10–20 cm) from during different stages mid–high latitude northern regions, determined changes quantity quality using fluorescence spectroscopy parallel factor analysis. found that altered effectiveness nutrients water content. During succession, content humus-like substances topsoil increased protein-like material decreased, whereas subsoil remained stable. pH was affecting change composition The variation may be related vegetation composition. results suggest fluorescent components respond significantly driven by conclusion, our reveal optical factors influence peatlands This suggests can modified simultaneous cover.
