Bisphenol A alternatives are manufactured as potentially less harmful substitutes of bisphenol (BPA) that offer similar functionality. Pollution-induced neurotoxicity is of high concern. This pilot study investigated the potential relationship between presence microplastics (MPs) in brain 180 wild fish (Dicentrarchus labrax, Platichthys flesus, Mugil cephalus) from a contaminated estuary and activity acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme. MPs were found 9 samples (5% total), all them D. labrax collected summer, which represents 45% this species that season (20). Seventeen recovered samples, with sizes ranging 8 to 96 μm. Polyacrylamide, polyacrylic acid one biopolymer (zein) identified by Micro-Raman spectroscopy. Fish showed lower (p ≤ 0.05) AChE than those where not found. This study documented seasonal levels of microplastics (MPs) and biomarkers (condition index, neurotoxicity, energy, oxidative stress) in mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis), water physico-chemical parameters the Douro estuary (NE Atlantic coast), estimated human risk MP intake (HRI) through mussels. Mussel stress was determined Integrated Biomarker Response (IBR). HRI from mussel concentrations consumer habits. MPs were mainly micro-fibres (72 %) with varied chemical composition. Seasonal means (±SEM) ranged 0.111 ± 0.044 (spring) to 0.312 0.092 MPs/g (summer). variations (IBR: 1.4 spring 9.7 summer) not related. The presence of pesticide residues in waterbed sediments poses a significant concern for aquatic ecosystems' health. This study examined contamination 38 water bodies, embedded agricultural-dominated regions, across eight European countries. Three indicators were targeted: occurrence, type, and concentrations multiple sediments. 196 (including degradation products) tested the sediment samples. analytical results showed that only one sample was 'pesticide-free', three samples contained single residue, remaining 34 mixtures residues. Overall, 99 different found sediments, with maximum 48 sample.
