In recent years, microplastic pollution has become one of the major global concerns and represents a complex, multidimensional, multisectoral reality. The considerable existing data relating to in matrices such as water soil suggests that microplastics are widespread globally, but there several knowledge gaps regarding their actual distribution mostly remote locations far from sources. this review we examine current on Antarctic continent. Antarctica, unique continent not permanently anthropized, is southernmost part planet its geographic isolation does protect against harmful impact human activities. This characterized by limited internal sources high-burden external routes contaminants natural laboratory analyze how can reach every biosphere. reports presence organic inorganic only at marine level (water, sediments, benthic organisms, krill, fish) also freshwater (lakes, rivers, snow, glaciers) highlighting contamination endemic environment. Microplastic great environmental concern everywhere, characteristics ecosystems suggest they could be more sensitive harm pollution.

Urbanization itself is a major and furthermost imperative contributor to the release of microplastics into environments. As cities grow develop, more plastic products are consumed discarded, resulting in increased pollution levels. Although researches on airborne (AMPs) urban regions scare, recent findings have shown high concentration them air residential areas. Textiles main source indoor ambiance, while traffic-related particles, textiles agricultural marine appear be responsible for polluting cities' outdoor atmosphere. Local metrological situation, topography physical features particles control behavior, distribution fate microplastics. Inhalation primary exposure route may induce toxicity respiratory tract. Understanding these factors crucial developing effective strategies mitigate their impact human health environment. Current work reviews published literature settings aiming at characterizing parent's materials, potential sources both spaces, possible impacts along with some further suggestions.

Microplastic (MP) pollution is a major environmental concern for mountain ecosystem and high-mountain lakes in particular, which are recognized indicators of global change. In this study, the presence MPs was assessed abiotic (water sediment) biotic (zooplankton, tadpoles, fish) compartments two (Upper Lake Balma Lower Balma) Cottian Alps (northwest Italy). No were found water zooplankton samples, whereas mean sediment samples 1.33 ± 0.67 items/m3 1.75 0.62 Upper Balma, respectively. The tadpoles Rana temporaria 0.33 0.58 items/individual 0.66 number items gastrointestinal tract (GIT) fish (Salvelinus fontinalis) considerably higher specimens from (0.45 items/g GIT) than those (0.20 GIT). There negative relationship between size (weight age) abundance GIT fish, indicating that young accumulated more MP probably due to high prey ingestion rate compared adults. same color (blue, white, black), shape (fibers fragments), chemical type (polypropylene polyethylene) both lakes. Our findings suggest use S. fontinalis as an indicator Further studies needed better understand sources effects these remote ecosystems.

Aquatic environments are one of the final destinations for microplastics. In this review, a combination systematic and narrative literature review was conducted to identify summarise advances, gaps, future directions in microplastic monitoring studies Turkish aquatic environment inhabiting organisms. A total 62 peer-reviewed publications available on Web Science were considered review. Additionally, current state pollution which includes marine freshwater ecosystems, as well organisms, sources characteristics microplastics reviewed narratively. Türkiye`s position global plastic treaty mitigation practices also addressed. Although an increase number over time observed, extent carried out ecosystems limited. Strict legislation should be enacted enforced tackle Türkiye. nationwide, long-term at sufficiently regular intervals considered.

The Arctic and Antarctica represent two of the most inhospitable poorly investigated biomes in world. Although polar regions are still perceived as some pristine places existence, these remote no longer immune to anthropogenic pollution, particular, micro- nanoplastics. Seabirds, avian species feeding mainly at sea, indicators change environment an early study group ecological for plastic pollution. goal this bibliometric overview is evaluate international research trends on impacts microplastics (MPs) nanoplastics (NPs) seabirds inhabiting regions. A total least 13 seabird were reported have ingested MPs from 1983–2023. Overall, 1130 samples investigated, including stomach content, pouch guano, pellets.
