Abstract Microplastics (MPs) pollution is a significant concern within environmental degradation, prevalent across various ecosystems, including aquatic and terrestrial environments. Industries such as agriculture, laundry, tourism, personal care products, cosmetics primarily contribute to MP in both soil ecosystems. The ingestion of MPs by marine organisms, followed their subsequent transfer along the food chain, has been extensively documented. Additionally, presence environment potentially exacerbated climate change dynamics. Notably, studies have revealed that soils exhibit interactive effects on nitrogen carbon cycles, leading increased emissions N 2 O up 37.5% CO 92%. Despite numerous highlighting MPs' abundance adverse impacts there remains knowledge gap concerning correlation with broader implications for human health. While previous research shed light ecological consequences MPs, comprehensive review addressing between ecosystems impact health yet be presented. present study offers overview types sources, impacts, transport pathways under changing climatic conditions. findings this are anticipated towards mitigating thereby minimizing associated greenhouse gas emissions.

Ingestion of microplastics can lead to deleterious consequences for organisms, as documented by numerous laboratory studies. The current knowledge is based on a multitude effect studies, conducted with conventional fossil-based and non-degradable plastics. However, there lack information about the acceptance effects novel bio-based biodegradable Biodegradable plastics are considered an alternative showing rapidly growing production rates. disperse into environment in same way do, becoming available marine organisms. This study aims provide new insights uptake invertebrates. Rockpool shrimp, Palaemon elegans, were fed algal flakes coated polylactic acid (PLA), polyhydroxybutyrate-co-valerate (PHBV) low-density polyethylene (LDPE) microparticles. Live observations showed that all different types ingested. After dissection less LDPE particles found stomachs than PLA PHBV particles. indicates longer retention time compared microplastics. Presumably, ingested or evacuated from stomach, probably regurgitation. ingestion microparticles induced enzymatic activity short-chain carboxylesterases midgut glands shrimp. only medium-chain carboxylesterases. elegans no oxidative stress response after microparticles, irrespective polymer type. From our results we conclude might have times enhance exposure leaching additives other harmful substances. Our provides how affect aquatic fauna indicate use needs be reconsidered some extent.
