Worldwide urbanization presents challenges and opportunities for food systems. Urban populations increasingly worry about access to safe, nutritious food. However, urban agriculture is expanding combat insecurity reconnect residents with their supply. This chapter examines farming’s growth implications. Models like community gardens, backyard livestock, rooftop production address deserts generate income in resource-limited cities. enhances resilience by diversifying sources but also introduces safety risks from contaminated soils infrastructure gaps. The evaluates related heavy metals, waste, inadequate land planning densely populated areas. It explores innovative strategies soil testing, pest management, hydroponics, vertical farming ensure safe urban-grown Positive impacts on diets, economies, supply chains are highlighted when supported. barriers limited training producers persist. concludes policy recommendations maximize inclusive development prioritize public health. The objective of this article is to deepen knowledge about the existing connections, at level urban environments, between energy, water, and nutrients (or food). Energy basic resources—water food—are closely interconnected, which why water–energy–food nexus constitutes essential integrated approach ensuring sustainable development humanity. This also valid in environments can be adapted for buildings, interconnecting, case, nutrients. a literature review area, intending highlight strong connections integrating results obtained different studies showing global importance nexus. water–energy relationship buildings already well known terms production domestic hot water or building pumping, example, but it turns out that goes far beyond interrelationship, having implications public networks. Regarding water–nutrients play an important role food security humanity, especially regarding possibility recovering phosphorus buildings.

Abstract The issue of food waste is being widely discussed in national and international forums its relationship to healthy diets environmental impacts with implications for security hunger. Data shows that the average household consumer throws away nearly 1 kg/day. Reducing has significant direct economic nutritional at level. Food management behaviors need be improved reduce FW include making nutrition plans, grocery lists, proper storage, processing, optimal consumption (zero waste). This research explores strategies empower households through resource optimization. method used literature review. Based on a search PubMed using keywords household, 104 articles were obtained 6 then selected further research. results show wastage tends occur experiencing insecurity because expenditure poor mostly aimed buying staple foods. Socioeconomic status still main key high insecurity, so redistributing leftover those can certainly improve people low socioeconomic status. Actions taken by management.

Inefficient urban transformations pose multifaceted challenges. In this context, agriculture (UA) can address environmental and socio-economic issues. Despite recent UA policies in São Paulo, the lack of data hampers comprehensive evaluations, highlighting need for robust indicators to enhance sustainability. This article assesses Paulo’s potential using an Ecosystem Services (ES)-based approach, combining ES spatial mapping a producer survey at 49 sites. Results show natural habitats anthropic areas within urbanised land, especially south, with high habitat quality scores. Nine were identified: food supply, commercialisation, income generation, waste mediation, lifecycle maintenance, soil formation, leisure/social, well-being, education. Utilising mixed methods, study provides innovative insights into related offering valuable input planning.
