Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics have gained significant attention as emerging environmental pollutants due to their widespread presence potential health risks. In recent years, these contaminants been frequently detected in drinking water various beverages, prompting concern about sources effects. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the occurrence MPs beverages exposure assessments. MP concentrations vary significantly across countries regions, influenced by diverse factors such efficiency treatment plants, level pollution sources, condition transportation pipelines. Another critical aspect discussed this is assessment human MPs. Similarly, daily intake shows variation different regions. Beyond concentration water, an equally important factor quantity consumed, which can differ much two orders magnitude between studies. These variations consumption are key focus article, they greatly influence estimation exposure. Furthermore, it discusses limitations current research, emphasizes gaps understanding nanoplastics, outlines future research directions.

Abstract Previous studies reported microplastics (MPs), antibiotics, and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). There is still a lack of research progress on the origin, fate, impact hazards MPs ARGs WWTPs. This paper fills gap this regard. In our search, we used “microplastics”, “antibiotic genes”, “wastewater plant” as topic terms Web Science, checking returned results for relevance by examining titles abstracts. study mainly explores following points: (1) origins fate MPs, antibiotics WWTPs; (2) mechanisms action sludge biochemical pools; (3) impacts WWTPs spread ARGs; (4) harm inflicted environment human body. Contaminants sewage such ARGs, antibiotic-resistant bacteria enter soil water. can travel through food chain thus reach humans, leading to increased illness, hospitalization, even mortality. will enhance understanding among they inflict

The extensive production and application of plastic in recent decades has resulted the presence microplastics (MPs) different water bodies. Considered as contaminants emerging concern (CECs), MPs are accessible to a wide range organisms can act vectors for transport other persistent organic pollutants. existing technologies remove from wastewaters prevent their intrusion nature, still present several limitations, resulting an urgent need develop novel, fast, cost-effective greener alternatives. In this work, magnetophoretic capture by assembly with magnetic nanoparticles through either electrostatic interactions or molecular forces is investigated. For experimental assessment, were synthesized hydrothermal coprecipitation solvothermal decomposition methods, while polyethylene (PE) microspheres selected model microplastic As noteworthy novelty, thermal particles functionalized amino groups sodium alginate (SA), respectively, modification surface properties enhanced MPs. After preliminary experiments, concentration 1.3 g L-1 contact time 20 min between MPs, operating conditions assess influence functional on performance. variables process was also evaluated, including synthesis method, pH medium, varied 4–8, constituents that may be Results demonstrated types polar make them interact towards attraction forces, considerably enhancing performance bare nanoparticles. This work represents step forward development new reliable techniques environmentally friendly polluted waters.

This study is a review of current knowledge on microplastics (MPs) in aquatic environments. In addition to identifying the sources contamination by MPs water and hazards their presence, an attempt made systematize terminology polymeric microparticles according size describe other parameters characteristic MPs, i.e., shape color. Special focus was placed most important methods used extract from environmental matrices, as well latest effective analytical methods, highlighting advantages disadvantages. The value paper pointing out developments analytics, existing inaccuracies limitations field providing practical guidance. Groundwater is an often-overlooked resource, while its declining quantity and quality of global concern. To protect ensure stable groundwater systems used as drinking water supplies, a common method to artificially recharge these supplies with surface water, process called managed aquifer (MAR), that has been globally for decades. However, waters MAR often contain elevated concentrations anthropogenic chemicals emerging concern (CECs), such plastics, pesticides, pharmaceuticals personal care products (PPCPs), or per- polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). When infiltrating this can thus act shortcut CECs into eventually supplies. Especially PFAS are example very persistent contaminants showing atypical transport patterns during posing risk ground- contamination. This systematic review addresses the through by looking at (1) CEC in waters, (2) factors affecting possible retention MAR, sorption other physio-chemical mechanisms CECs, biological chemical decomposition, hydrogeological properties system, (3) key leaching well treatment options improve MAR. Since we facing increasing needs high lower guidelines number identified conclude series recommendations future research directions address issues. Those include need regular monitoring programs specifically addressing especially not yet regulated, (very) mobile contaminants, PFAS, redesigned quality.

This paper reports preliminary findings on microplastic (MP) presence in Rzeszów Reservoir sediment, Poland, considering ecotoxicological risks. Sediment samples were collected from three shoreline stations, and a custom density-based method was used for MP extraction. The extracted pollutants identified using the Laser Direct Infrared (LDIR) method, both quantitatively qualitatively. At stations R1, R2, R3, contamination of 120,000, 70,000, 7500 MPs/kg dry mass determined. A total nine types plastics identified: polypropylene (PP), polyamide (PA), polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), polyurethane (PU), terephthalate (PET), polyacrylonitrile (PAN), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), rubber, with PU being most prevalent. Spatial variation occurred abundance, polymer diversity, particle size. station closest to reservoir tributary characterized by highest abundance MPs, greatest variety polymers, largest MPs. calculated PHI (Polymer Hazard Index) indicated very high risk at all classified category V five-degree scale. Further research is needed assess Reservoir’s its ecological consequences.
