Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics have gained significant attention as emerging environmental pollutants due to their widespread presence potential health risks. This paper reports preliminary findings on microplastic (MP) presence in Rzeszów Reservoir sediment, Poland, considering ecotoxicological risks. Sediment samples were collected from three shoreline stations, and a custom density-based method was used for MP extraction. The extracted pollutants identified using the Laser Direct Infrared (LDIR) method, both quantitatively qualitatively. At stations R1, R2, R3, contamination of 120,000, 70,000, 7500 MPs/kg dry mass determined. A total nine types plastics identified: polypropylene (PP), polyamide (PA), polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), polyurethane (PU), terephthalate (PET), polyacrylonitrile (PAN), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), rubber, with PU being most prevalent. Spatial variation occurred abundance, polymer diversity, particle size. station closest to reservoir tributary characterized by highest abundance MPs, greatest variety polymers, largest MPs. calculated PHI (Polymer Hazard Index) indicated very high risk at all classified category V five-degree scale. Further research is needed assess Reservoir’s its ecological consequences.
