Ferroptosis induced by environmental pollutants and its health implications

Abstract
Environmental
pollution
represents
a
significant
public
health
concern,
with
the
potential
risks
associated
environmental
pollutants
receiving
considerable
attention
over
an
extended
period.
In
recent
years,
substantial
body
of
research
has
been
dedicated
to
this
topic.
Since
discovery
ferroptosis,
iron-dependent
programmed
cell
death
typically
characterized
by
lipid
peroxidation,
in
2012,
there
have
advances
study
its
role
and
mechanism
various
diseases.
A
growing
number
studies
also
demonstrated
involvement
ferroptosis
damage
caused
organism
pollutants,
molecular
mechanisms
involved
partially
elucidated.
The
targeting
be
effective
means
ameliorating
PM2.5,
organic
inorganic
ionizing
radiation.
This
review
begins
providing
summary
most
important
ferroptosis.
It
then
proceeds
offer
critical
analysis
effects
induced
pollutants.
Furthermore,
as
is
case
all
rapidly
evolving
areas,
are
numerous
unanswered
questions
challenges
pertaining
pollutant-induced
which
we
discuss
attempt
provide
some
directions
clues
for
future
field.

Toxic
cyanobacterial
species

Microcystin-LR
(MC-LR),
a
class
of
cyclic
heptapeptide
compounds
synthesized
by
cyanobacterial
species,
presents
significant
risk
to
ecological
systems
and
public
health.
Exposure
MC-LR
was
found
induce
damage
various
organs.
One
the
target
organ
affected
is
gastrointestinal
tract
(GIT).
However,
majority
studies
regarding
GIT
focused
on
colorectal
toxicity,
with
little
attention
paid
small
intestinal
toxic
injuries,
in
particular
jejunum.
Thus,
aim
this
study
investigate
effects
attributed
exposure
apoptosis
underlying
mechanisms
utilizing
mouse
jejunum
injury
model
following
chronic
low-dose
treatment.
A
total
40
C57BL/6
male
mice
were
randomly
divided
into
4
groups
each
group
receiving
drinking
water
containing
0,
1,
60,
or
120
µg/L
for
duration
12
months.
Results
indicated
that
induced
pathological
alterations
jejunal
tissue
as
evidenced
abnormal
villous
serration,
crypt
disorganization,
lymphocyte
infiltration.
TUNEL
assays
demonstrated
increase
apoptotic
cell
count
60
groups.
The
treatment
exhibited
elevated
mRNA
expression
Bax
accompanied
reduction
Bcl-2.
protein
levels
cleaved
caspase-3
markedly
p-RAF
p-ERK
significantly
increased
Data
suggest
RAF/ERK
signaling
pathway
may
be
involved
MC-LR-
apoptosis.
